  • Life has been… busy. I would say there isn’t enough time, but the truth is that I haven’t been using the time I do have wisely. Anyone who knows me in real life won’t be surprised by that one bit.

I’m learning to make the dough at work. I make preffer and poolish and all of the organics. Then I pull the egg dough that the night crew makes for me and I shape that into coffee cakes, cinnamon rolls. sticky buns and challah.

The hardest part has been learning how to braid the challah… I still don’t have it. I was hoping to find a diagram online, but we do a four strand braid and all I’ve found so far  are  diagrams for a six and a three…

The three one looks like no sweat… but ahhh it isn’t so easy when you throw another strand in there…

Tomorrow I start BAKING! Yup, they are letting ME control the ovens… Look out Traverse City.

Don’t worry, I will be very careful, don’t want to ruin my resolution before the first month of the year is over!

What have you all been up to? Anything exciting?

Do you get antsy when you haven’t blogged in awhile?

  • I bought a new computer screen yesterday,  the other one was playing up after 4 years 1 month.

  • A four strand is like a French braid, kinda thing. They are hard! I have only tried it on hair, not bread dough!  I post something every two days, so I don’t have time to get antsy. Like a clock, I am. Tick tock. Post.

  • nothing near as exciting as braiding bread … which is way out of my league to begin with … kuhl that you are learning new things and “moving up” …

i don’t think i get antsy … i don’t blog every day … only when i have something happen that might be of interest  … something significant you know … like dead houseshoes … ha

  • @DanishDoll - then I should pay better attention and make it to your site more often! Now that I know how your clock works work… I WILL!

  • Angi you are amazing, how cool to learn all these things!!! I have been trying some new recipes on family, when successful I post them here. That is about the most excitement in my life! That and cracking the whip to get some help around the place. That is kind of a new trick I did and it seemed to work! I will try this again after the guys get over the shock of me doing it the first time!!!

Have fun baking, don’t burn the bread!!!

  • I swear, at first glance, those diagrams look like how to braid a friendship bracelet or something. lol

  • I’ve been trying to post more often between lesson plans. Some days, life can just be overwhelming. I was wondering how you were doing.

  • Do you make kosher challah or is it more generic?

  • I’m trying to upload a cute video, but xanga is giving me problems.

  • Wow, you have been busy.

That is pretty neat that you get to be so hands on.  I think they would make me wash up

    Have you watched this?

    4 strands

  • I get antsy when I only have time to blog and not enough to read and comment on all the others that I subscribe to. I feel cheated! lol All the wonderful conversation and feeling of connectedness is lost if I’m away too long. Sad to say, I’m pretty addicted not just to posting but to hearing from all the friends online…

  • I have only ever seen the Challah bread braided with the 6. Not 4 or 3. Hmm. Guess ya learn somethin new everyday.

As for your question about blogging…I can remember a time when not even 1 day went by without me blogging. Sometimes I’d blog several times in 1 day. Now I don’t know…I just blog when I can…or when I feel I have something to say I guess.  Though I will say sometimes I wish I blogged more.

  • yah, that braiding looks hard. i never even had the experience of braiding hair. i think that gives you an advantage over me if i had to try any of that.

to answer your questions, i just got back from vegas, and in the coming days you will see what exciting activities i experienced. and, no, i don’t get antsy when i’ve not blogged for a while. what’s it been for me, three or four days? i’m pretty good at the blogging part. it’s the going thru and editing photos part that’s a pain ;)

  • I hadn’t posted for awhile either. Til today. Busy too! But hey, now that you’re rollin in the “dough”, can ya spot me a twenty??

  • I love the smell of fresh baked bread and rolls and yummies. I gained 2 pounds just reading this. lol

  • I think you’re pretty awesome for handling all that bread. I don’t know if I would have the patience to do so day in and day out…

I’ve noticed that I can go without blogging now, but I couldn’t seem to back then!

Have a great week, Ang! Happy Braiding and Baking! Tracy

  • Wow, yeah, I would think the 4 strand one would be really difficult!!!!   3 is easy, but 4!!!!

Enjoy the oven work girl!!!!  LOL ~ no accidents now hey!!!

  • Started to write that no I don’t get ansty but on second thought
All new jobs are tough at first, hang in there.
Life has most taken a turn for the bummer here, which is probably why I haven’t posted much.

  • I like to where a french braid but I couldn’t get hubby to learn to just do the 3 strands-he is retired phone company and he was doing it with the different color phone wires-can’t you see his buddies teasing him ?lol

  • Sounds like you’re enjoying this job! I went on a tour here in town of a bread
factory. Very interesting! Have a great week!

  • @DanishDoll - Oh, no it isn’t kosher, I’m not sure, but I think that it would take longer to make… The bakery is all about gettin it done. lol

  • good luck, angi.  you’ll do great.

  • I use to braid wheat and figuring it out was a pain!
I get antsy when you don’t post!!!

  • If I was still in touch with my friend Tim I could give him a holler about how to braid your Challah! (ha, ha, ha) They make their own for Passover- and as I recall it was a four braid variety.  Here’s hoping you keep that resolution… but just in case do you know where the fire extinguishers are at work?

  • I’m glad you’re getting to do some fun and challenging stuff at your job.

We all don’t use the time we have very wisely. You’re just one of the few who will admit it.

Good to hear from you again. I have been busy-ish as well. Work. Gym. Chores. Dog. Little sister. Skiing. Baking stuff. 2009 is flying by already.

  • lovely!   life is bread, and vice versa….may you always have lots of yeast!  in the bread, of course

  • So, now they’re going to let you make a little dough.  ‘Bout time.  I have made challah before in my house; fun braiding the thing.  Haven’t made it in a long time.  I’m not doing anything exciting unless you consider worrying exciting.

  • That looks like fun. Good Luck. I do feel antsy if I don’t blog and guilty when I haven’t read blogs.

  • What is nobler than bakering ? You are going to me a master is this Art , Ang .( without forget the glass work )
Anyway my rythm of posting is at least a week but I blog since 2001 . Who goes slowly goes long !!!!

    Love

    Michel

  • Here are a couple of links to 4-strand braids that might help. Each shows a different way of doing it.

I hope this helps you.  I love fresh bread, wish I could try yours!

  • Mornin Glorie….It’s was a rough week here….I learned to french braid my own hair…but I never threw in a fourth…I have no dought you’ll figure it out and get er done…I get antsy when you don’t post too  the kids are growing up fast – we need information!…ilym

  • @fauquet - Dang Michel – that’s a great quote! …..ilym

  • I tried braiding challah once. Can’t say I did it well. It definitely isn’t something you can master the first time around.

  • yikes that braid looks very tricky.  I have put away ‘almost” all of my traps and now have the ice fishing gear out.  Yes!   Going tommorow.  Also have a mink trap out under a bridge on my way to work.  I have caught two muskrats in it.  This mouring the mink walked right by my set and the bait.   I’m thinking about putting 100 traps under the bridge so there is no physical way he can not get caught.   I have always struggle with making mink sets and catching them.   Ugh.

Well thats what I have been up to .

And I want to see the cow brain mushroom picture please!

  • Are you looking for a flat four strand braid or a braid that comes out square like a box?

I can get instructions for both.

I have been doing these for years…. I currently can do 87 kinds of braids.

  • I don’t know how to bake, but I do know Challah is delicious.

And I can go long stretches without blogging. I’m like a blogging camel.

  • Those knots make me knotty.

And blogging is so fun, but so time-consuming. Bah.
