GIANT heads…
The kids and I took a road trip yesterday.
It was just what I needed to chase away my fall blues.Where did we go? I’m glad you asked!
We went to Onaway, Michigan!
Onaway is a small town located somewhere over the top joint of the middle finger of Michigan.
It’s like any other small northern town, except for the heads.
GIANT HEADS!The first one you see going into town is George, right out in the middle of a field.
There were deer grazing around him, but we spooked them off when we stopped the car.
I had envisioned a picture of the kids running around the head with the fall colors in the background, but the trees behind him were almost empty, it was raining, and only two of my little monsters felt like corporating.
Ahh well, so much for my vision.
The heads are some of the creations of the Moran Iron Works.
Mr. Moran makes a new sculpture every year and unveils it during the 4th of July parade.
He makes more then just heads, there are toads and monarch butterflies and other fun things but they tour around and we didn’t have the time to track them all down.Lady Liberty
It was a great road trip.
We saw and did more cool things too, but I’ll share those tomorrow.
Now for the BIG question…
Would you take a two hour road trip to see GIANT heads?

Yes, I would do that with my kids when they were younger. It’s just “far enough”, lol. It would be a good way to teach some history of those representations, too! I’m glad you and the kids had a great time!

I SO would!!! I love seeing stuff like that, that you can’t see anywhere else!! I would like to see those in person!! Haha!!
Sure would take that road trip.
x
I would go for a two hour road trip to see giant heads, for me it would had to a day trip and a few days stop over.
Sure! What are they made of?
I would take a road trip to see giant heads.
I think it would take me about 5 hours since I’m 3 hours from Traverse plus the 2 it takes to get there FROM Traverse.
@DanishDoll - Some type of sheet metal I think… very sturdy and HEAVY, yet some how they manage to move them all over. lol
you bet I’d take that road trip. I once drove four hours to go to the spam museum, so my judgment could be off =0) Glad it chased away those blues!
I would drive two hours to see those. I won’t drive seven hours or however long from my far SW corner of Michigan all the way up to the northernmost point of the lower peninsula. But next time we go to Mackinac Island, maybe we’ll detour to Onaway.
@saintvi - It’s just a hop, skip, and a jump to the bridge! I think another forty minutes… We didn’t do it though… it was raining, ironically when we turned around to go home it stopped! lol
Ooh how fabulous…you could have always crawled under some of those head (the first two) if the rain got too bad…hehe.
I would so take a two hour road trip to see giant heads or anything slightly different…even in the rain…for it rains most of the time in the UK.
Infact…this weekend when we make our 7 or so hour trip to Cumbria (in the north of England)…I intend on making everyone go to see Hadrian’s wall…and I know it will probably be cold, miserable and raining…but that’s what wellies were made for.
i absolutely would! esp if i got to go with you
Two hours? No! lol But it looks very unique!
Hmm. I don’t know. If it was just for the heads then probably not, but if there was other cool stuff along the way I would consider it.
those heads are cool and kind of creepy. people who live in onaway can say they live on the middle finger of michigan? awesome. like they’re always giving the bird.
gas is so expensive, you gotta have good reason for road trips–like GIANT HEADS.
Two hours away makes for a nice day trip. Besides giant heads have to be an interesting sight to see!
Those are awesome. I would totally drive 2 hours to see those. Esp if there’s a fun restaurant on the way.
absolutely! we don’t have anything like that here
Ummm… no. They kinda creep me out!
But I do love the fall foliage! Can’t get that around here!
I absolutely would! but thankfully you’ve done it for me so I don’t have to now! LOL
yes and no….i’d have to have someone to witness with me the awe giant heads seep out
Sure I would, it looks like a great place to visit!!!
Giant heads – - I love it! Quirky in a large way. Who could ask for more… okay, sunshine and giant heads.
Absolutely. I want to come back as one of your kids. You do such cool stuff with them.
nice pics! big heads! big hugs!
Giant heads seem like a pretty good reason for a road trip!
its hard work… recording ones life..
Sure….that looks like a worthwhile trip…
I’m not gonna lie- those creep me out just a little bit.
I like the statues.
whoa, those things are super scary haha
Absotootly! We used to go to strange and interesting places with the kids. We stopped on the way to visit my parents (a 3 1/2 hr trip) in Kokomo to visit the Grissom AF airplane museum. They are all outside and the boys loved it – there were a couple that you could climb into… I would go see giant heads if they were only 2 hrs away.
You’re so lucky to get to see all these places, Angi. I wish I could go to Michigan, too! Did you eat any good food?

Btw, I miss you! Just letting ya know
Omgoodness….I see GIANT heads every day in the hallways of the junior high school.
heck yah i would! them big ol heads kick some big ol ass
of course, especially with kids !
I think they are a little creepy.
Um, okay. Those are a little bit weird. And yet kinda fun too. Yeah, I think I’d make that trip! MISS YOU!!!! (((hugs)))
I thought we were doing this together again in the summer.
Yes. IF there was geocaching on the way!
If I had kids, yes..on my own? Probably. Those are actually pretty cool looking.
Cool Statues, I am not sure I would drive 2 hours just to see them, but if I am ever going by I will stop and look lady liberty in the eye!
Nice pixs. Is this a trick question?
Have a good hump day girl!
@Random1974 - Well of COURSE we are going to do it again in the summer… and we are going to do the Castle Rock and the Bridge… maybe the Fort… Beth is supposed to be here the week before you usually come up.
I would if the kids were a little older. Lady Liberty looks like she needs a shave or something – very masculine looking.
As for the pictures, I tend to the find the best ones aren’t the ones I have visions of capturing, but the ones that take you by surprise
If course, and it would seem like there has to be a cache or two also. And I was right there is one that is about these heads.
The price of gas has come down a bit so I’d consider a 2 hour road trip, no problem! Although I’d cache along the way and make it much, much longer. I once took a very long detour to see the World’s Largest Egg, but they’d made it a virtual cache so there was more temptation for me that just going to see the egg.
Thank you Ang to make us know those amazing sculptures . They are fantastic.
Love
Michel
I’d even drive 3 hrs to see them, love Lady Liberty’s pointy lips!
i’d go see mt rushmore. but these guys are funny looking!
I would travel two minutes to see them :p
I’ve never been to Michigan. But now I want to go and see the giant heads!
They are very interesting. But I think it’ll be kind of creepy at night
, when you are driving on the road and seeing these big heads.
