  • Now tell me who are YOU, You , you…

I have three days to come up with a self potrait and I don’t know what to do!

It all boils down to what I see myself as and I DON”T KNOW anymore!

My friend Amanda did a wonderful list of all of the things she is and I have been working on my list but I’m not sure it’s helping yet. My list  is painfully short.

If I were to ask you right now what you are, would you know what to say?  Would you stop at one word or do you have a list?

    Alright, so I am asking…

    How do you define yourself?

(If anyone has any good self portrait ideas, I’ll take those too… I’m at a loss!)

  • I define myself by my actions. Anything else is vanity, ego and misjudgement.

  • I cropped several different photos once and created a collage of my face.  It seemed very appropriate.

    I’m a photographer.  That’s all I want to be.

  • I’m “Aunt Mimi” to my great nieces and nephew. I love being a great aunt. It’s like being a grandma without the angst of being a grandma.

  • Hmmmmmm….I’ll have to think about that one and get back with you.

At a training conference last Friday, I was a classified as a “puppy” because I am most interested about the people at my job and I’ll do whatever people ask of me.  Unlike the “lion” types who just want to do their job and get it done well and quick and isn’t too concerned about people’s stories or feelings..  Unlike the “turtle” who takes the time to make sure all the details of their job and wants to the things done completely perfect.  And unlike the “owl” who has all the answers and knows all the laws and standards and facts, but sometimes forgets to pay attention to the people.

  • About me…..you don’t wanna know what I would say about me.  BUT about you…where do we start : you’re funny, down to earth, a brilliant photographer, a passion for your family, logical, intelligent……..and the list goes on and on and on!

  • I define myself by my actions, and the intent behind those actions. Actions tell the main story, but two people who do the same thing can have entirely different reasons why, even if they don’t know it.

As for the portrait, I don’t know…If anything good comes to mind I’ll be sure to let you know.

  • That’s a tough one Angi. Don’t really stop and think much anymore about how I see myself or who I am. At 60, pretty much all of my formative pages have been written. On all my profiles I simply say “VietNam vet and proud of it” but it is much more complex than that. I am not really where I wanted to be by now, but can’t really complain. I think I am a good husband, father and grandfather. Though some may say otherwise. I know I am dedicated to my family and my job. Probably not as good a friend as I should be. I’ve taken some pretty rough hits in this life, but I’m a pugnacious fighter, I don’t know how to quit or give up.

I don’t envy you this task, but wish you the best of luck!

  • I try to become more and more myself, eliminating what disturbs me ~ trying to augment what could be useful. A self-portrait? Ask the Sultan of your Heart and your Three Beautiful Monsters! I think you are just about the Best Thing which Could Happen to Xanga! X-ellent quality pics, amazing entries and such a cute humour! MMMMMMMuack!

  • me?
    always torn in between.

  • been thinking about this a lot lately. as i realize that i’m not any of the things i used to use to define myself. they are merely adjectives. i am.

  • Possibly another good question for entry to featured question…would be interesting to see what people come up with.

At the moment I would define myself possibly most by my state of mind…which given that I am suffering from depression and on meds…would not be good or a true reflection of me as I really am.

but yeah some of the suggestions above sound good…your family; personality; taking pictures and creating a collage or going through old photo albums, etc…

Hope you come up with something.

    xx:)

  • We had a group on here once, Art Exchange. We had a themed artistic goal to meet once a month. I enjoyed it. One month we had self portraits. I just did a charcoal of a picture of myself. I couldn’t think of anything artistic either. I don’t define myself…other people do that for me. LOL! Mom, Nana, wife, daughter, niece,….etc.

  • Make a photo quilt of your pics,of pics that represent your life, make the pieces resemble you.,glass ,kids, flowers and trees, frogs,do not forget the moustache.A picture mosaic.

  • It takes a pretty self aware person to be able to define themselves. We are all so many things in so many different situations. My only advice is to be honest. if you have a temper own up to it, if your afraid of cotton own it. Be true to yourself and he honest.

  • My son had an assignment on the same order. He did a portrait that was split and showed how he though others saw him, how he saw himself and how he wished he looked… It was very cool, done in oil pastels.

  • You’re asking a very important question.  It has taken me years of life experience and education to figure it out.  I am glad that I have.  Enjoy the journey of discovery, and never forget, the “I” is always in the context of the “Other.”

  • while more of a description, than a definition, for me, it’s “organized chaos”…hugs, animal

  • I can’t even begin to imagine you having a short list… you are so many things to so many people… not the least of which is MOM.

As far as self portrait, I think Beth has the right idea.  Or my thought would be a photo of your childrens’ eyes… I think what we are is really what is reflected in the eyes of our children or those we love.

  • @seedsower - Oh wow ~ I think Seedsower has the most amazing idea for you!!!!!!

  • You obviously mean a “written” as opposed to a photographic self portrait?

In any case, I am a historical raconteur with linguistic and photographic tendencies.   I am basically a teacher and salesman.  Or are you looking for deeper things…uh…what was the question again?

  • I agree with Seedsower-if you can make a side outline of yourself and a brain with everything that is in your life.

put a few wierd things in for whimsical since you are.lol

  • I know what you mean when you say ‘I don’t know anymore’ about how to describe yourself. We moms tend to get caught up that role, and lose who we were before. I did a similar thing on a Kween’s challenge. I basically just made a list of my little quirks, likes, favorites, habits, dreams, etc. If it supposed to be more of a picture portrait than a word portrait, I like seedsower’s idea of making the photo mosaic of those kinds of things.

  • That’s actually a very good question, and I realize I’m not sure how I’d define myself. I’m going to have think about that~I really liked seedsowers idea.

  • I am an enigma.

I think all girls are, to an extent.

  • I’m something different everyday. I’d be hopeless if I tried to put it all together. I had to do a self portrait in school once. I photographed my hands and came up with something cheesy about being what I create. It was a cheap move, but I got an A, lol.

  • I like seedsower’s idea personally

  • I define myself by my thoughts, actions, and the lack thereof.

  • ALL JOIN IN SINGING…
‘Cause I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
    .

  • That’s deep! Outwardly/Inwardly/Mentally????Very interesting.

  • Remember the silhouettes they did of us as kids…just black and white. You could do that with the words that describe you inside…or in stain glass… because you do that so well.

As far as who I am… I would have to think about it.

  • You can see it here but it will not allow me to embed it.

  • after I left the library I sort of lost my sense of identity for awhile. it’s not that I defined myself as a librarian, but others did and I let them go with it and got used to it. I think I’m still working on the whole concept.

    I do like beth’s idea for you…I think that’s a great idea!

  • A photo of you taking a photo.

  • I like to think I’m too complex to define myself!  LOL

Self portrait? Whatever makes YOU comfortable!

  • describing self would be based on what others think of yourself, what you think others think of you and what you actually think of yourself…
for me, i define you as being unique!

  • I really like someone’s idea above that their son did. I did something like this only with pictures cut out from a magazine. I had a picture of me, a picture of what I thought I looked like, and a picture of what I wish I looked like. It was very interesting. Also perhaps the things that make you, well, you. The things you love to eat, or the things that make you happy like gardening or berry picking (examples of things you’ve talked about lately >.>; ), the people that you love, the art that you make. All of those things define bits and pieces of who you are. It’s what makes you, you! Awwww.

All of these smart ass answers drive me batty.   So you know what? I’m gonna answer this honestly. :-p  I am defined by the people I love and the things I love, and therefore, I am the glue that holds everyone together. It’s true. None of my friends are very close and if I wasn’t around I don’t think they’d even talk to each other. My family is the same. Although, with my above statement, this does not mean that I eat glue.

But yes, I am glue. My cousin said something interesting that I think might fit this. She said, she is unlike anyone else in the world, just like everyone else in the world. Also, where did this self portrait thing come from? Did you blog about it before and I just wasn’t paying attention?

  • i am “diligently lazy”

baba o’riley is my fave who song. i downloaded it for my rock band game. it’s pretty awesome

  • Simplistic as it sounds, I am first and foremost a follower of Jesus.  Everything I do flows out of that identity, all the roles I play, all activities — professional, avocational.  He shapes everything in me.

  • me? i’m jon2 and there’s no one in this world that you can find in replacement of me.

  • One suggestion comes to mind…lol…don’t put a beard on it!

  • Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

    That help?

  • How do you define yourself?

I have always defined my self as me… I am me… robyn… that is the only way to define me…

goodness I don’t know if I could do a self portrait right now… I like TheGreenPanther‘s idea… but maybe use a mix of your facial parts w/ those of your kids… and mix them together??? I would do that… cuz part of me is them at this point in my life… don’t know how easy that would be or what medium you were wanting to use… but that’s my input!!!

    ttfn…

  • Hi, I can’t comment, cause I’m on strike

  • I really don’t define myself. I find it constrictive.

As for your self portrait, start with a beard and a moustache and proceed from there.

  • You work with glass… a mosaic? You can superimpose photos on glass, decoupage? …..I don’t know!  It take some people their entire life to figure out who they are.  A lot of little things add up to who we are.  Start with the basic elements: Not what defines you, such as mom, wife, etc., but outside of everyone and everything: what your core is. Build it from the skeleton up:
As for myself:  I have a steel personality. It’s the core of me.  I  have fragility to me too, like glass: I love my family, and there is an element of a possible shattered heart with that, so I tend to protect my heart from everyone but them. My joy twirls itself around everything, weaving in and out like colorful ribbons. My life has taught me the importance of being calm, cool and wise, but this rages against my impulsive, fiery side. I am fiercely protective and tenacious. I am an artistic expression of my Creator.
    You asked, girly.

  • Say you have a beard. Hahaha….Well how about coming up with a whole list of adjectives from the dictionary, then crossing out items which you think aren’t you at all.

  • @mercyless1 - Don’t forget a mysterious sex god… or was it sexy mystrious god? lol

  • Mornin Glorie………I like Beth’s idea too……I’M SINGING TOO…
‘Cause I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?) ilym
