  • We went to the movie AGAIN today…

The State Theatre in Down Town Traverse City was restored by the Traverse City Film Festival.

Last Tuesday we saw My Neighbor Totoro

    It was enjoyable.

Today we saw Fern Gully, for 25 cents and they gave us free popcorn!

Every Tuesday is free popcorn and all movies before noon are 25 cents all of the time.

Anyway, I thought you guys would enjoy the inside.

    Inside the State Theatre.jpg

The ceiling has hundreds of little star lights.

Next year the festival will be in it’s fifth year.

    Boy is it something.

They have a whole week of movies, they put up a giant inflatable screen in front of West Bay and show free movies on it every night.

Last year my favorite was North by Northwest, this year it was Singing in The Rain.

I was told Madonna was in town this year.

(It was on the front page of the local paper.)

If you start planning now, you can make it to next years festival.

Call me, I’ll go to a film with you!

Oh… eventually, I am going to make it to one of the 25 cent movies that isn’t a kids show.

  • I remember seeing Fern Gully years ago .. what an enjoyable time ..  The theater is beautiful !

  • This is so us that you posted this… I was going to post pics from inside our “State” Movie  theater too,it is old Egyptian decor,it is shabby chic!

  • Good shot btw Ang.

  • I love Miyazaki movies, in fact I watched “Grave of the Fireflies” today, it was really sad. My favorite is still “Howl’s Moving Castle”.  I thought “Ferngully” was too hit you over the head with the enviormental message, a little more subtlety would have been nice.  The movie theatre is beautiful, are the seats comfortable too?

  • Nice boobs in your  new pic.

  • They are really perky.

  • Do you think her bra is twisted?

  • Ooo that’s a pretty looking theatre. They’ve just done up the theatre near me and it looks pretty swish.

aahh Fern Gully. I remember it well :D

  • 25c for a film?  That sounds like a bargain.  Can’t say that the free popcorn is much of an advantage.  I think I am the only person on the planet who hates the stuff.  Would also love to visit a film in the US next year, but alas I am heading in more or less the opposite direction.

  • @indigolady - They recline! They are all new and very comfy! I love Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Cariboo!  I haven’t heard of the Firefly one! I will check it out!

@Krasno1 - My hubby dosn’t like popcorn either!

@seedsower - Definitely her bra is twisted or its an underwire…

    I miss you too!

  • Sounds like fun times. I thought it was an accomplishment to catch up on some of my DVR’d programs last night… and I had to be sick to justify doing that!

  • @Shirlann - Are you implying that I’m a bum who wastes time!

You know me so well! lol (hug)

    Hope your feeling better!

  • I love My Neighbor Totoro, its my favorite of Miyazaki’s work,  I’ve haven’t seen it since the late 80′s-early 90′s. It was a nice contrast to the ultra-depressing Grave of the Fireflies.

  • @angi1972 - I would never imply such a thing; I was mostly just jealous that you’ve gotten to enjoy some movies with your little ones… envy, not judgement!

  • WOW! Big fun for a quarter! Quite a value with free popcorn, too!

  • OOohhh! Looks like a lovely theater!
Way to keep the place alive.

  • @Krasno1 - I also don’t like popcorn. I think it feels like the popcorn tries to kill you while you eat it.

  • Did you use a tripod for that picture?

  • I loooove My Neighbor Totoro! I would like to ride on a cat bus.

  • @nattata - Ha ha!  I love this description.  Why is though that my wife always likes to get a big tub of popcorn with a film.  It’s so clever of her, because she knows she will not even have to share a single piece.  Ice creams, lollies and sweets for me!

  • @Krasno1 - You have a smart wife (with weird eating habits ).

  • I just LOVE old movie theaters. I am hoping to get back to the Stanford Theater soon. Who knows, maybe this weekend.

  • Oh yeah, and the Stanford isn’t 25 cents with free popcorn, but it’s 6.00 and popcorn costs like 3.00 for a large. That roughly equates to “25 cents” and “free” in Bay Area dollars!

  • oh i love fern gully! that theatre sounds wonderful. i’m afraid those fancy theatre houses are becoming a thing of the past.

love the new profile pic. the swirls in the background are very 2008 olympian of you.

  • popcorn is the food of the gods.

  • madonna is from bay city, you know. born in the same hospital that donkey was, but a few years later….

  • I love the shot of the cinema inside. Whew. Talk about a pretty picture. And I heard the movie’s good! (Totoro) But I’ve not seen it.

  • that’s a pretty nice theater and a great deal yall got there. that’s awesome

  • @WinsomeONE - I didn’t… I propped the camera on the balcony ledge though to help steady it.

  • I LOVE Miyazaki’s films, but havent seen this one.

  • The theatre is beautiful!  I love the twinkle lights! The festival sounds great… 25 cents sounds lovely too!

My family really likes the director Miyazaki.  Everyone in my family has a favorite movie of his.  The Grave of the Firefly’s is not like his others, it’s a tragic movie that deals with war, homelessness, starvation, hopelessness, and death. Just so you know. My daughter had tears streaming for a while.  Here’s a Youtube overview.
    Have a great day- HC

  • Our next-town neighbor plays free movies during the summer for the kids, but it’s a modern cinema with little to no charm. Well, unless youre a kid — the red and green running lights installed on the floor and a few feet up on the wall are fascinating to them. The seats do recline and have adjustable armrests. Kendrah always puts hers up so she can snuggle with me. Quin always leaves his down so he can shout at different times during the movie with his hand dragging mine to the cup holder in the end, “Look, Mom, feel here! Triangles in the circle!” It’s a nice place, but nothing exotic or something I’d want to take a photo of.

  • I really loved totoro!  we first saw it in Japanese!   it was ok !   love ya

  • We have an old movie theater here that turned into a restaurant called “the brook”. Wonderful eats and nice surroundings too.

  • I love Totoro and Fern Gully!! And 25 cent movies, no fair!! Thanks for coming by and wishing me happy birthday. :o

  • Ah, Totoro
Over here, that movie is a national treasure.  People won’t shut up about it.  It’s the Casablanca of Japan.  Aaaarrrgh!

  • it looks amazing.. you’d think for 25c  the place would be full…
