Excited babbling
This is one of my favorite photos ever.
I am thinking about it because it’s by Diane Arbus, one of my favorite photographers and she’s from NEW YORK!
Right now my brain is full of Beth, barns, amish carriages, Lancaster County, Times Square and New York City.
Eleven more days and I can’t wait!
OH SO about the photo… Most peoples first response is that its creepy…
But really.. really look at it…
Do you think it’s creepy?

I kinda think it does. It’s the eyes…
But I’m excited for you and your trip
Yes, in fact I do. It makes me think of The Shining.
You are coming to NYC? I hope you enjoy!
No ,it is not creepy,I bet they look right like their dad!
I can’t wait to see you!!!

I think this is terrifying. It’s the second girls eyes and the firsts expression. I don’t like dolls and that’s what they remind me of. Although I think they also look like that little girl from the movie “Matilda”
well, it’s kind of like the twins from ‘the shining.’
No, I don’t think it’s creepy, but what do I know? LOL
A Xanga meeting in the offing? Cool!
Kathi
yes. It is creepy but in a way that I like. Have a fun & safe trip.
I don’t find it creepy at all, but then I have twins. Twins (mine anyway) are bizarre and terrifying from time to time, but never creepy. To my Daddy’s eye it looks like Mom just snapped at the one on the left to “stand up straight” and the one on the right is amused that her sister got in trouble. Which causes me to think the one on the right is the oldest. =)
I hope your trip is a wonderful adventure!
Old hat
Some of those old photos are really creepy. this one is not.
Ohhh… NYC! Am so jealous, that is where I am from and I still have lots of family there too. Been a few years since I could afford to get there.
Have a great time!
Love the photo! Like Diane Arbus too..
This woman is a genius. Absolutely one of my hero’s. Her subjects are so strange, and so photo worthy. They disturb you, creep you out, make you feel uncomfortable. This is why they are so brilliant, because they evoke such real reactions in people. There’s quite a lot to be said for anyone who can achieve that in even one photo alone, never mind an entire career of.
Check this collection of artists out. So inspiring, and so frustrating (“why do I suck so bad”, kind of frustrating):

I don’t think the link is live, so you may have to type it in. Hopefully it works. If not, I’ll find a way to get you there.
I didn’t think creepy. I thought what a difference a smile makes.
x
They almost look like Simese Twins, but they aren’t. You can see the kid on the left side’s hand barely poking thru.
No, they aren’t creepy. I think it was probably a great time back in the 20 and 30′s, but b&w can be decieving sometimes!
Hugs, Tracy
They do in a way look like the twins in “The Shining.” I have to admit that. Have a safe trip.
Not creepy to me at all!! Precious in fact!! I know you are excited about your trip…I would be too!!
I don’t think it’s creepy at all, but then I like both Diane Arbus and the “unusual” people she portrays. Normal is, indeed, boring to me.
Ummm….yeah.
I don’t think it’s creepy.
I can’t wait to see what kind of trouble you and Beth get into
one of them looks sleepy, thats all.
Yes!
Yes it is creepy…now I will mostly like have nightmares about creepy twins…
trying to eat me!!
I’m hearing REDRUM! REDRUM! and COME PLAY WITH US DANNY!
I think they look a bit odd thats all!!! I know you are excited about going to Beth’s and taking a trip to NYC! I cannot wait to hear the stories and see the pictures!!!
I think haunting is a better description.
I know you will have a great visit!
There are two possibilities that it makes me think of.
Someone had two daughters and they dressed them alike (lord knows my mom did the same with my sister and I at that age), actually the two girls look like twins.
The other possibility is that they are in the children’s choir and those are their choir robes.
I honestly don’t find the image creepy or haunting. I LOVE old photographs like that.
Hugs’n'Smooches!
Not terribly attractive girls, but not creepy!! You’re going to wear yourself out twittering and babbling before you even leave!lol.Hope you have a GREAT visit!!
Pretty much! LOL
nope I don’t think they are creepy either….then again I have twins too, so go figure…..are you packed yet?….are the kids going with you?…..can I go with you?……REALLY
A little odd….I thought it was like a mirror image of the two…just kind of different…
…now I am sounding creepy!!!! You sound so excited about your visit……can’t wait to see all the pics!!
It’s not creepy, only a little different. Hope you enjoy every minute of your trip!!
I think “Man with Curlers” or any of her other pictures of circus freaks is way creepier!
@DiscoveredAngel - That’s it exactly- thank you.
I don’t think I’d want it anywhere I ‘d see it first thing in the morning!
Wow what an amazing portrait photo. The eyes…it’s the eyes…they are so enticing…they draw you into the picture…the contrast of the bright eyes against the dark hair…I really love old photos. Oh I really must upload my door pictures for you.
I hope you have a great trip.
Hey. I have been thinking about you all day. Hope you are well…not so creepy – although identical twins are a very interesting phenomenon (six sets on my mother’s side of the family). I like that they don’t both have the same expressions . . .yes, haunting is a much better description. Great photo at any rate. Thanks for sharing…Sandra
Nah, I think it’s a cute pic. I am so excited for you. Wish it were me! You are going to have SUCH a blast. Don’t forget us here! (((HUGS)))
YES! Very Creepy! I too am reminded of the twins in the Shining. Redrum! redrum!!!
yikes!
will check out the artist tho, because they’re also interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Good for you. We just missed each other. Enjoy. You know there is a new art-o-mat at Utrecht Art Suppy – 111th Fourth Ave, NYC
Diane Arbus was the first photographer to have any real impact on me in college. I think she is genius. There is something there. But I wonder if it is in context with all of her other pictures.
I don’t find this photo creepy at all! You are going to have so much fun in NYC! It’s not high up on my list of destinations but I can totally see YOU there! As a matter of fact, I hope to see lots of pictures of the whole experience (with you in some of them, please). Peace
yes! ::shivers::
The photo has taste. And humor. And creepiness of the Turn of the Screw type, somehow.
Hey, please make sure to post tons of pictures of Lancaster for me, ok? I come from about 40 minutes east of Amish central and haven’t seen any of it for many years. I know you’ll get some great shots.
@shellisland - *shuddering* OKAY! I’ll try to post at least one with me in it… but only because it’s you asking… I HATE having my picture taken. lol I know I am a selfish brat! Hmmm maybe I can get one of me and Beth with the naked cowboy? Do you think our hubbies would mind? lol
Put it this way.If I woke up in a room with those 2 at the foot of my bed I’d have a heart attack. You would not see me for dust baby!!Sorry girls you’re justt TOOO scary

I think it’s creepy. Maybe if it were in color it would seem more friendly.
it’s a great picture once you really look at it. its weird how two people can look so different but the same with a second glance.
I think one sees the glass half full and the other sees the glass half empty.
VERY creepy— reminds me of The Shining.
