  • What’s in A Name

On Sunday we were discussing the wandering in the wilderness, and how they came to a place and they named it. It made me wonder, what would that be like? To just show up somewhere and want to give it a name?

I don’t even know where I am half the time, so how would I know what to name something? In fact two of my own children were without names for a couple of days after they blessed this world with their presence because I had no idea what to name them! Oh the pressure of a name!

I love taking history classes. One of the historic events I find most fascinating is the Lewis and Clark expedition. It all started with a project I did  in third grade on Sacagawea. I don’t know how anyone could not find that woman fascinating.

On their journey they named things, in fact it was quite amusing that Clark would often name things after random women  his heart had taken a  fondness to, this was much to Lewis’s chagrin and frustration, since I don’t think that he himself had much love of women. Okay I exaggerate, ONE river, the Judith river Clark named after a woman. I wonder though if perhaps that is the ONLY thing Lewis allowed Clark to name.

What’s in a name? I had never really thought of it before this week and I don’t imagine that there are many truly uncharted territories here on Earth that need names. The sky is full of them I am sure, objects searching for names, after all, can’t we all purchase a star and name it? Of course you would never get to see what they sold  you.

I have  piece of earth, and it doesn’t have a name. It has an address, but where is the fun in that? I think it  deserves a name. I mean don’t all of the most exciting places have names? Look at Graceland, Tara, the Play Boy Mansion… they all have names that make them DESTINATIONS, not just addresses. Granted one of those places is fictional, who cares!

As God is my witness, I will never go hungry again!

    Oop’s sidetracked.

So I want my place to be a destination not just an address. I think I need a name for this bit of earth. I am not the best namer of things though as Baby girl and Baby boy McG discovered early on in life.

So I need a name. Imagine that we are explorers of this life, everything is open before us and uncharted, you have come across a land of great beauty, a land full of mystery and wonderment, what would YOU name it?

Oh the pressure of a name!

  • I want to be the first to comment, even if I’ve not read the post!!!

  • I love naming things,I enjoyed naming my dog.
If I had a summer home I would name it Jubilee.

  • Hmm, you have opened my eyes to the fact that my place has no name, either. How sad. D1 gets her kicks naming Sims. Naming my kids was enough pressure. And I apparently am not good at it. When I named D1, I had never heard her name before. There are at least 8 of them in her class of about 600 kids. D2 hates her name, but it isn’t overly common. I just learned yesterday that D3′s name, which I believed to be very old (1800′s) and not very much in use, is actually becoming popular. Great.

Given my ineptitude at naming, I’m going to have to pass on helping you name your homestead. Do be sure to share when you have one, though.

  • how about “mustachio” ?

  • dang-droptop11 beat me to it!

actually my cabin and woods have no name yet. I did name the creek behind it tho-it is called Turtle Dance Creek. now I gotta work on a name for my homestead…more work…

  • Your name is Ang like Angel and you are it . Is not an angel  everywhere ? so you have adventure !

    Thanks Ang
    Love

  • Speaking of children’s names…..I didn’t have one either,
until my great grandfather came in to see me. There was a song, no idea as to
the name about Mickey with the blue eyes. And when I was a baby I was all
eyes…so the name stuck. As my nickname of course…because my mother was
clueless as to a name for me….so she named me after a song playing on the
hospital radio. I’ve never had a home of my own…but if I did I know that I
would give it a name. Some day I’ll grow roots, really I will.

  • Gone with the Wind is a WONDERFUL movie!!!!

  • Sacagawea…I just like saying that.  Can’t help with the name thing ’cause my naming skills are nonexistent. Thus, the reason I need to change my username to something pronounceable (sp?).  Anyway,  my three spawn are named a, b, c, because I just opened the baby name book and started at the beginning of the alphabet. See ….lame-o!

  • we couldnt’ come up with a name for our first one….so we named him after his dad :)    he is the third. :P

  • I like naming things. My washing machine is Beulah. My other car was Miss Ellie, This last car is the Great White. My cousin named her red convertable, Cindy. We called our 2 acres The Mini farm and 12 acres we have now is “The Strawberry Patch” because that’s what it once was. I named my children after people in the family that I loved. Have you ever noticed how names match people? I had a book on that, said that Linda’s have blue eyes, Jeans are friendly etc etc…or that is the first opinion of people with certain names. So if you like your place, maybe think of it’s history…or a person you like really well. Like ….GAILdom! LOL!
    I love this post.

  • We have a little place away from the city where we go  run the puppy and front porch booze …. we call it the “Blotto Grotto”. I admit it lacks a  pastoral ring…but in the dog days of summer it sings out to us.

    Nice Post and
    Regards,

  • Fiddle dee-dee, Angie Sue.  You know we don’t have time to be falutin’ around with names at a time like this!  Those Bullard boys are expectin’ us at the barbeque any minute!  Now, help me tie my petticoats.

(giggle)  I just love Gone With the Wind!

Our place is named Descending Dove and it was named by the man who built it back in the 70s.  It references when John baptized Jesus and the dove came down and landed on his shoulder.

If we were to name it now, however, it would probably be called, Yellin’ Yahoo or Ramblin’ Redneck.  I think we’ll stick with Descending Dove.

Now, hurry up and climb in this carriage!  We’ve got a barbeque to attend!

  • My Mother took great care in naming us. My first name and middle name together mean Bright and sparkling light. Candace is bright and sparking, Lucilla means light. I kind of think it makes it special!!

I do OK with naming things. I waited till my boy named his pup till I chose mine, I thought they belonged together. So his is Blaze and mine is Glory. We have might go down is a Blaze and Glory, but the names will sound cute together!!!

Our home land has been named, it was first “double C” but when Cody came along we named it the “Triple C” when I write it there are two double CC on top and a singe C on the bottom.

Good luck in your search for the perfect name!!!

  • Last time I saw a land of great beauty I wanted to call it home. I am still loving it and I shall miss it forever or as long as I have to stay here instead of being there. Finding a name for your home… let us think… I like naming things but I have to know more of it! So I guess I go and have a look if you already posted some pics? That’s the nice thing about not blogging in a while, one can read a lot of entries…

  • We call our place McFergusville in honor of my Scottsh ancestery, but I too am totally inept when it comes to naming children and pets and other minor evils!!

  • I was reading some of the comments and it struck me (quite indirectly) that since you’re a lover of history–what is the land’s history?  It may give you ideas for its name.  earlybirdie’s right on–have to know more about it for anyone to offer suggestions.

In England and other places, it seems, cottages and homes always have a name and they’re always so pretty and unusual, the names.

  • Yup, we need more info.

We own our house but not the land it sits on so we haven’t named it, although I don’t know that we will even when we do have a place totally our own. I was a bit obsessed with getting my kids names right and as soon as the ultrasound showed me I was having a girl she was named, as soon as I knew I was having a boy, he had a name. It’s a complicated process that I gave myself; each name had to be 7 letters and 2 syllables long, and the boy — but not the girl — could have it shortened to 4 letters. This is how it is with my dh and I, so that is how it was going to be with the kids. Also, the meaning had to be something desireable. I love the name Tristan but it means noisy. So forget that. Quinlan (shortened to Quin) means well shaped and graceful. Kendrah means full of knowledge and wisdom. I think I done good. But naming a house is beyond me.

  • I had a really hard time even just coming up with a gamer tag name for my xbox. i’m so not the person to ask. hehe

  • When my son was about Cooper’s age we would go away and he’d say, “I want to go to my happy home”.  So now our place gets called “happy home” sometimes.  Other than that…it’s never been named.  I’m looking forward to what you come up with!  Peace

  • I’m not sure what you are naming; I tried to look back to see (to Sunday)….but I am still confused.  A Summer home? I am still not sure what exactly is getting a name.  When I do know, then I’ll try to have a suggestion!

    Happy Thursday!

  • Let;s call your house the triple T ranch.

    Triple Trouble Ranch. Get it?

I love to name things. My car is named Gus. As you know. I have never thought to name my house. I have called it the Pug Liar.

I bet you like my breaks, I call you and type comments on your posts!~

  • i love naming things. cus, in my mind, if i name it, i OWN it. and i’m greedy like that.

i used to call the house i live in now ‘the deer camp’ cus it was so barren when hub was a bachelor here. but i haven’t named it since i moved in. hmmmm……now you’ve got ME thinking too. damn you woman! [jk]

  • well, sometimes i call it ‘the other white house’ cus it’s on pennsylvania ave but it’s not even white so that’s pretty lame.

  • Like you I’m not great a names!!!! I will leave this one to some one else.

  • Supercalifragilisticespialidocius.  Now that’s a name for a home.

  • omg… what a challenge!  i feel the same pressure you feel.

I think scientists ran out of names for things they find in the universe since there are now names like X-12 or YG-9.  Just don’t pick anything like that

  • I wish I had some real estate to name.

    How about “Mustache Manor”?

    “Angel Hair Hall”?

  • ha ha that’s interesting… I go in and out of wanting to name things… thou both my kids had names by the time I was in my third trimester, due to my anxiety of not having a name for them… LOL

come up w/ any good ones yet?

  • You could come here… I call my plot of land Beard Bed and Brothel… The Official Home for Wayward Pets and Children…

It seems to feature revolving doors…

  • @Mother_Moonie - Now that sounds like MY kind of place!

  • if you call it gerkland ill visit one day and i will bless it with photos haha  =P

  • @GERKshinobi - thanks Gerk! I will remember that!

  • What a charming idea.  Name our land.  That is very special.  I must think on that ….I usually just call this The Cottage!

  • Why don’t you call it Angi’s Place…

And as far as names are concerned, this is a poem I wrote about my name.

    His Name

    His name

    Which goes before me

          Announcing my arrival

    Follows fast at my departing

For I cannot shake the same.

    And his meaning

    To the suitors

          Who come calling for attention

    Is defined by the actions

In the presence of my aim.

    Then so defined

    It is determined

          That any course of action…

To some is for my glory and –

          to others –

    For my shame!

  • I would like to find a place rich in iron so I can call it “Big Iron” in tribute to Marty Robbins.

    ‘Cuz he rox!

  • Shall I be boring…..I’d possibly name it Paradise….but then again, as soon as you give it a name, everyone wants to go there, and I’d like to make it a private place by invitation only – LOL!
Have a good weekend Angi!  Miss you!

  • Think I might call this place ‘The Mortgage’
I was glad when we went to Itasca to see that at least they named one trail Ozinwindib, Henry Schoolcraft is noted for discovering the headwaters of the Mississippi.
He ‘discovered’ it after Ozinwindib pulled out his map of it and lead him there.

  • just wanted to finally say “hi”.

i think names are very interesting. my favorite story about naming things would have to be how all the old Testament people named their kids. like when Abraham and Sarah named their son Isaac which means laughter – since it was hilarious that they had a baby at such an old age. and then how Hosea named his kids “not loved” and “not my people” as a prophetic sign… ok, so that story is pretty much totally sad and disturbing. but anyhow, it’s definitely full of meaning.

    have fun naming your address!

  •  I might name such a place Jubilee like I would a summer home or Caanan after the promised land or Edens Edge…. Ciello….
    Haven… Sojourn’s End…
There are two million names in my head

  • growing up we had a truck named “Tatonka” (from that movie….Dances with Wolves) and a forest called the Magical Forest, And all us kids had nicknames…I was mimmi, sarah was Matilda (she hated that!) Anna was Anna Banana and Karoline was Karoline Nuisance (she thought it was her middle name!)

    Good luck naming your land!

    *HUGS*
