Some day I’ll do a post on all of the various jobs I’ve had in life. I’ve had A LOT… almost all of them fun.
Today I am thinking about one job. This moment of nostalgia brought on by the Oscars.
One of my first jobs was working at a movie theater. I started out selling tickets and doing concession and moved my way up to projectionist, building films and shutting down the theater.
Those were the days. Staying up until three or four in the morning on canister day to build the film. When the nights regular shows were over we would preview it, often bringing in our friends and family to watch and have fun with until the wee hours of the morning.
If I wasn’t at school I was living and breathing movies. Passes were free so on days off, I had friends wanting me to take them to the movies… Yes, they used me for my free passes and I let them!So the point of this post… yes, I think I have one… Last night I hadn’t seen ANY of the movies that were nominated for the best. I am not sure that I’m sad about it even, no I can’t say that I am. It was very odd watching the Oscars and not rooting for any one or anything. It made the whole experience a little anticlimactic.
Ahhhh well… Here’s to hoping next year is a better year for movies.
How about you all? Did you enjoy Oscar?

I worked as a paperboy for years. I then worked at Cinnabon and as a cook. I also worked in door to door sales while I was making my way through school. Currently I work at
Xanga cut me off.
I’ve thought about a part time job at a theater just so I could see movies for free.
@TheTheologiansCafe - YOU are SUCH a big TEASE!!!
@BB61 - Free popcorn and a bottomless cup of soda… free movies… in between show times there is nothing to do but hang with your fellow employees and watch the shows that are running… I saw the piano scene in Pretty Woman over two hundred times I am sure… Its a great job to have if you can get it!
@angi1972 - My friend John was a Scout in the Troop I was an Asst Scoutmaster in years ago. He used to give us passes and, if he was working, free popcorn. He’s a good kid. He joined the USMC, finished his hitch, and graduates from the NJ Police Academy in a few weeks.
I had friends that worked at a movie theatre in high school. that was pretty fun! I saw Michael Clayton and Once.. and that was it.. I kinda wanna see others now.
I tried getting a job at our neighborhood movie theater… paid only $1.50 an hour + all the free movies and food galore. But my friend got the job instead. She always smelled like fresh melted butter!
Anyway, I was not impressed with the Oscars at all. Never heard any of the movies and most of the winners were foreigners. But it is fun to watch all the dresses, I guess.
didn’t watch the oscars and haven’t seen any of the movies, but i did hear daniel day-lewis won and that always excites me
juno was good…..but a good movie is hard to find.
I’m not a fan of the Oscars, so didn’t watch, but I know that Juno was up for several awards, and I hope it won at least a few. My first job was Burger Chef, which is now Hardees. It was in the ’70′s and we had to wear an orange and brown polyester uniform, which was topped off with a brown polyester newsboy cap. Tres chic.
I worked in the greenhouse for my first paying job….and I am still here!
I did not see the Oscars but I use to make sure to see all the movies and then I loved watching them!
One year I watched a lot of the movies at my friends house because he is a voting member of the academy, and they get sent a package to watch, that was the best!
@k8tthelate - Yummy isn’t he!
I didn’t watch. I rarely even turn the tv on anymore. And I’m pretty sure the last movie I saw was when I was in Chicago. Yeah…..October. That was the last time.
that’s so cool! i have dreams of opening a one-screen theater that only shows old movies – aghhhhhhhhh
I like to look at the dress’s -I got bored after awhile-my mom back in the 40′s was an usher at the theater.cool ,huh with the flash light and now they just let hour stumble around.
My parent were quite the resource for us when our monsters were little, we would take the grand monster more if the DIL would allow it. We are having ‘issues’ there.
Didn’t watch the Oscars but then I haven’t in at least 30 years.
My first job was shoveling out stalls, none of my friends wanted a free pass.
I hadn’t seen any of those movies, either. And don’t feel that interested in them. Hollywood aint what it used to be.
Didn’t watch the Oscars, and I haven’t seen any of the films-some I haven’t even heard of-I just go through Netflix, it’s a lot cheaper. My dad used to be a film distributor, but he started out as a ‘Gal Friday at a film company-he LOVED film!!
I didn’t get to see them, I did hear that ratatouille won, I think that is fun!!!
The movie theatre in our town lets the firefighters in to see movies that are over 2 weeks old, kind of a neat thing. The last movie we saw was “Bucket List” it was great!
Maybe someday I will tell of some of my fun jobs!!! For a while my Dad thought I’d never get a “real” job. Truth is he knew I was doing something I loved and getting paid for it, not a bad gig!!!
I love the movies…………
didn’t see them at all…
@Leonidas - You didn’t miss much, but I have a feeling you knew that already! lol
Ang…no wonder you, Rizz, and I connected!!! Rizz and I met while working at “The Movies at Miller Hill Mall.” I had 3 jobs at one point but WOULD NOT quit the theatre. I would still be working there part time if A. It was still open and B. I didn’t live 1,000 miles away from it now. Yup, all the free movies you could watch. It’s still hard for me to pay for ‘em.
Ryc: Thanks for cruising over. I have no idea what the others are going to do with their pieces. I’m just hoping that mine doesn’t end up looking like poop or party vomit. Because then I’d have to be polite and say thanks for playing anyway.
We didn’t even have a movie theater in our one horse town.
I used to work at a 7-Eleven and the pervs and shoplifters always came during my shift.
I did not watched the oscars, I am unsure whether it was shown on television in the United Kingdom. It will have been too late for me to stop up, since I had a two week course starting today about helping us back into work in the area of work which we want to work in.
Ang, great post! What a great idea, posting about past jobs.
I felt the same way too, since I hadn’t seen any of the movies nominated. So, for me (us), it was also anti-climactic.
I had a friend who worked in a theater and he gave us (me and my giggly friends) free passes too. It’s the way of the world–it’s a must.
A local newspaper columnist made an interesting observation by way of announcing that he was not planning to watch the oscars. He said that it was interesting that the movies that were nominated were full of violence and did not have very good box office returns, where the feel good, entertaining, movies which did enjoy box office success were not nominated. The inference was that for a movie to be “serious” required serious depressing content to be worthy of an award. I say thank goodness for Ratatouille. . .
I was going to watch it, but I forgot. Besides, I’m ever only interested in the best actor/actress/movie categories.
You use to run the movies! SWEET!!!
ah i didnt see the oscars because i was stuffing my face with korean barbeque
Thought “The Oscars” were boring and so was Jon Stewart.
I’ve had so many different jobs over the years, I can’t remember them all. My fave was working as a carnival psychic or fortune teller. Hey, if you have the gift, you might as well make it pay.
RYC: I’m 60 years old and way past menopause. If I am pregnant, will be calling newspapers! LOL! Thanks for the thought though.
Didn’t watch it… had no interest. I haven’t seen to many movies this year, myself.
dan
I didn’t even know Oscar was around…
I’m with you- very anticlimatic… in fact I didn’t even watch them. I saw the recaps just so I’d know who won, but it was really just an incredibly boring year for movies I think. At least the ones that were nominated. I saw a couple of them, and was highly disappointed. Well crafted and of course Oscar worthy no doubt… but could have been better. Redemption in the face of bad life choices seemed to be the theme… but the two I saw, no one really redeemed themself in the end. Ah, well- next year should be better I hope.
Actually I missied the Oscars.
@GERKshinobi - RUB it in! I wish I had been… oh that sounds so yummy. There are no korean eateries here in podunk Michigan… I have to wait unil we visit Detroit.
I”m still alive….pooped….in my brain, me thinks….I liked watching them walk the red carpet, it’s like a wild bird show!
I live and breath movies.
My first real job, besides babysitting, was hairdresser and manicurist. Not fun.
Ah! I should’ve watched the Oscars! Damn!
I remember those days, bringing in buckets and cups for popcorn. I loved sneaking into the movies while you worked. I remember staying up late to watch “My Girl” and crying so hard I lost a contact. I remember watching ‘Silence of the Lambs” so many times just because I could for free. What was up with that? I loved working there- I mean I loved my awesome older sister working there. I did a post a LONG time ago about all the jobs I worked. When you post yours, I will link to mine.
I LOVE YOU SISTER! I miss you!
I haven’t seen any of the movies that were up for the award either. I’m not much into the darker movies. I do like watching the Oscars though – it’s fun to see what people come up with to wear and all. Peace
now I love movies but dont watch TV
I never worked in a movie joint but I worked in an A&W rest. do those still exsist
ryc: I wish!
I watched only a few minutes of it but quickly grew bored of it.
I didn’t watch the Oscars this year. I feel so disconnected from everything like that. And I never pay attention to reviews or awards. I watch what I think I might like. LOL
I haven’t been a regular movie goer or oscar watcher in about 7 years… (interestingly enough my oldest just turned 6) LOL…
we were watching Star Wars IV: A New Hope last night…
its crazy that you would say that- i just read an article that the oscars had the lowest ratings its had since ratings began because no one really cared about the movies that were nominated…
alooooo im back
lol….cinemas pay heaps here to work there hheehe
