  • MAIL ART!!!! I know you want it!

Earlier this week I sent off a piece of mail art to a fellow Xangan.

I haven’t heard from her if she has gotten it yet, so I won’t post pictures of it just yet.

I will post some things I have sent off in the past though and didn’t show you.

    mailart 2-29-08 008.jpg mailart 2-29-08 013.jpg

Yes, Its an altoid tin. I mailed it just like this, the recipients address is painted on the back.

    mailart 2-29-08 014.jpg

This one was a Burger King toy I shamelessly stole from my child.

When we were in line and I handed it to the post master, my little monster said “Hey! I have one just like that! ”

to which I replied “Not any more! “

I’m not completely horrible… I replaced it for him!

When you move the red handle the brain lights up and gurgles…

Around the outside in silver I put…

I felt a cleaving in my mind -as if my brain had split- by E.D.

    And

What other people think of me really is none  my business. by Rue Paul

    mailart 2-29-08 007.jpg

Probably my favorite piece as of yet.

    ToAST

I soaked it in ten coats of polyurethane.

When I went to the post office to mail it the P.M. sneered and said ” That won’t make it!”

To which I said “Sure it will” And conked it on the counter.

    He mailed it!

I think this one needs a follow up piece.

    BuRNT ToAST

I have more but I will save them for a slow blog day.

Any one interested in MAIL ART?

  • What’s in A Name

On Sunday we were discussing the wandering in the wilderness, and how they came to a place and they named it. It made me wonder, what would that be like? To just show up somewhere and want to give it a name?

I don’t even know where I am half the time, so how would I know what to name something? In fact two of my own children were without names for a couple of days after they blessed this world with their presence because I had no idea what to name them! Oh the pressure of a name!

I love taking history classes. One of the historic events I find most fascinating is the Lewis and Clark expedition. It all started with a project I did  in third grade on Sacagawea. I don’t know how anyone could not find that woman fascinating.

On their journey they named things, in fact it was quite amusing that Clark would often name things after random women  his heart had taken a  fondness to, this was much to Lewis’s chagrin and frustration, since I don’t think that he himself had much love of women. Okay I exaggerate, ONE river, the Judith river Clark named after a woman. I wonder though if perhaps that is the ONLY thing Lewis allowed Clark to name.

What’s in a name? I had never really thought of it before this week and I don’t imagine that there are many truly uncharted territories here on Earth that need names. The sky is full of them I am sure, objects searching for names, after all, can’t we all purchase a star and name it? Of course you would never get to see what they sold  you.

I have  piece of earth, and it doesn’t have a name. It has an address, but where is the fun in that? I think it  deserves a name. I mean don’t all of the most exciting places have names? Look at Graceland, Tara, the Play Boy Mansion… they all have names that make them DESTINATIONS, not just addresses. Granted one of those places is fictional, who cares!

As God is my witness, I will never go hungry again!

    Oop’s sidetracked.

So I want my place to be a destination not just an address. I think I need a name for this bit of earth. I am not the best namer of things though as Baby girl and Baby boy McG discovered early on in life.

So I need a name. Imagine that we are explorers of this life, everything is open before us and uncharted, you have come across a land of great beauty, a land full of mystery and wonderment, what would YOU name it?

Oh the pressure of a name!

  • Some day I’ll do a post on all of the various jobs I’ve had in life. I’ve had A LOT… almost all of them fun.

Today I am thinking about one job. This moment of nostalgia brought on by the Oscars.

One of my first jobs was working at a movie theater. I started out selling tickets and doing concession and moved my way up to projectionist, building films and shutting down the theater.

Those were the days. Staying up until three or four in the morning on canister day to build the film. When the nights regular shows were over we would preview it, often bringing in our friends and family to watch and have fun with until the wee hours of the morning.

If I wasn’t at school I was living and breathing movies. Passes were free so on days off, I had friends wanting me to take them to the movies… Yes, they used me for my free passes and I let them!

So the point of this post… yes, I think I have one… Last night I hadn’t seen ANY of the movies that were nominated for the best. I am not sure that I’m sad about it even, no I can’t say that I am. It was very odd watching the Oscars and not rooting for any one or anything. It made the whole experience a little anticlimactic.

Ahhhh well… Here’s to hoping next year is a better year for movies.

How about you all?  Did you enjoy  Oscar?

  • Danth has written a poem to go with one of my pictures. I love it! Thank you Dan!

    bird in a tree.jpg
    A small audience
    of fence posts,
    devoid of the hope
    of being clothed
    in spring attire,
    watch patiently
    the tree adorned
    in her wintry apparel
    of barrenness;

    await to witness
    the beauty of
    her awakening.

  • Taking Advantage

It was such a gorgeous day here today.

    tree shadows 2.jpg

Had to take advantage of it.

    I still tackled the mountain…

the mountain of laundry that is.

How in the world do five people generate so much freaking laundry?!

I am thinking I should cut the kids down to two pair of pants and four shirts…

    Think it would help?

    I am joking! Kinda.

    ice cicle sunset.jpg

An icicle sun set, a nice way to end the day.

It looked like strings of lights hanging from the eve of our house.

I’ve never watched a sun set in quite that way before.

  • Some of What I Saw

    birddof.jpg

We found these guys eating breakfast this morning, when we were coming back from eating our own.

    birds at breakfast 2-21-08 006.jpg

It was hard to get a REALLY good picture of them because they move so much and there all kinds of branches in the way. I could have stayed there another ten or twenty minutes taking pictures.

so I will leave you with some…
