Yesterday was Elvis’s 72? birthday. So I decided I would repost the story of my own Elvis encounter from 12/4/2006.
I just saw Elvis at the grocery store. Did I say my day was going to be boring… I was so wrong. I went to get my cart, and as I was turning around, there he was, pushing his cart through the sliding doors of the local Oleson’s store.
He was tall, about 5’11″ or 6′,although he seemed a little stooped. Everyone seems tall to me because I’m only 5’4″. He had short salt and pepper hair and black framed glasses with thick lenses.
As I turned and saw him I stopped, my cart narrowly missing a collision with his. “Go ahead” I said smiling politely. And here’s when I knew ”uhh…Thank you.” He said. I knew it…I heard it… I felt it… that soft southern drawl that rolled quietly from his lips… It was him…I had encountered Elvis…
His head down he pushed his cart through the doors and into the store. It took me a moment to collect myself, before I followed him into the store.
Then of course I stalked him down the isles. It was Elvis. Wouldn’t you?
Through the baking isle and down the snack isle into the dairy… which is good because that’s where I had to go. It wasn’t hard to follow the blue plaid short sleeve shirt, that he wore tucked into blue jeans. He was the only one in the store, other then me, without a jacket. I run hot. (also insane) He had a bit of a potbelly, but all in all, I would say he was in good shape for a dead guy. I was following him towards the baked goods, when I remembered I needed Mountain Dew and he wasn’t heading towards that isle. I was torn. Do I let the King go and follow the call of my caffeine? I could tell he was nervous when I had been reading the back of the milk carton over his shoulder. I don’t like to make people uncomfortable. I imagine having to hide your identity would make anyone a bit skittish. So I left him to the donuts, fudge brownies and unclaimed birthday cakes sitting in the isle of the baked goods section and went to answer the call of my master. Hoping I would catch up with him at the register.
Unfortunately I didn’t see him again and skulking in the grocery store parking lot when Ben and the kids were at home waiting for dinner, did not seem an option. So I stopped at the video store. Picked up some movies and came home to blog about my brush with The King…
Did I say it was going to be a boring day… And for all you nay sayers… don’t rain on my parade.
I live happily with my illusion that Elvis is alive and well in T.C. Join me next week when I will be looking for Jim Morrison at Best Buy…
I’ve been playing with PhotoShop Again…
