  • Christmas Plans

We will be heading to Detroit this Christmas. I was hoping to head to Florida to be with my Grandparents, but financially it just isn’t in the cards.

So we will be heading to the Motor City, where Ben and I both have family we love. My parents are going too so we will all be together.

My Father-in-Law sent me a preview of their beautiful tree so I could share it with all of you!  There are some things I should explain about a McG family tree first.

    • All ornaments are glass.
    • No ornament should be touching another.
    • No ornament should be touching a branch.
    • Bird nests will be allowed in the tree, other then that, no other form of ornamentation other then lights and glass bulbs will be allowed.

There… now you know the rules for the McG tree… Ben has relaxed a little with his tree, He now lets the kids put the ornaments on and then he goes through and fixes the tree. It works. Also he allows me to get glass ornaments that are different shapes. It’s all good and the trees always look beautiful. When doesn’t a Christmas tree look beautiful!

    Ken's tree

This years tree is special to them because they cut it at the family farm just before they sold it.

    Very pretty isn’t it?
My tree is going to look incredibly tiny now!

Do any of you have special rules for decorating?
What are you doing for Christmas?

  • WOW!!!

that is a pretty tree! Thanks for sharing the pic!

  • That is a very pretty tree!  Have fun in Detroit.

  • Too many rules about trees.

  • Well…not rules.  But this year all my lights are pink.  I have a little tiny tree with pink ligths and sparkly pink star ornaments.  Oh, and there’s a pink disco ball hanging on the top in place of the star.  I’m celebrating being a single girl over the holidays by decorating with the most girly color I know of!

    Beautiful tree, by the way!

I hope you have tons of fun in Detroit.  That’s the one place in Michigan I really don’t enjoy – too much traffic and too many buildings!!!

  • I’ll be in Traverse City for Christmas!  YAY!  I get to be near my beloved beaches…even if they are frozen over!!

  • I’m from Detroit, but currently live in West Virginia. Say hello to Detroit for me?

  • p.s. i LOVE LOVE LOVE elvis presley.

  • Ryc- I just finished my finals for this semseter.

  • that tree is beautiful !!

  • that’s one enormous tree – amazing

  • Wow… I can imagine it must be even more beautiful in real life!  RYC: You’s the best!  And now, I even have theologian’s stamp of approval on my blog.  I can never cancel my blog, ever again.

  • mom has very strict rules about all christmas decorations. no colored lights, no straw ornaments, no blue. silver and red and gold are the preferred colors, and on and on it goes

  • HOLY CRAP, now THAT’S a tree.

  • ryc:  I’m back on track now…so hopefully all will be well.  :)   I’m so excited about her coming I can hardly stand it.

  • that is a beautiful tree!   i love, love, LOVE haphazard Christmas trees…  the only thing close to a theme on my tree is the 24k gold ornaments my mother in law gives me, my hubby, and my children every year.  other than that, my tree is an ecclectic mix of different sizes and types of ornaments… from really fancy ones to the ones that are my favorites – handmade one from the kids when they were little. speaking of Christmas trees… i REALLY need to put the ornaments on it!

  • That is a beautiful tree. We cut our tree off our property this year (Sunday) because it will probably be our last year here. Maybe it’s good luck since they sold they’re farm, maybe we will too!

  • is that tree on roids? WOW! looks really beautiful.

  • Ooh, it’s gorgeous!  In comparison, just about *anything* would look like the Charlie Brown tree.  LOL

  • holy cow!! what a tree!! that is just amazing-and so beautiful.
our only rule is that the cat is not a decoration and not allowed in the tree. neither is the dump. not that she even knows what a tree is anyway.

  • That is amazing…

  • PS I get the buttons today and tonight is my 1000th cache!

  • what a gorgeous tree!!!!  have a great day sweetie!!!

  • Beautiful tree!

    Have a wonderful trip!

  • Before I had kids, I decided I’d have a blue and silver tree, nothing but blue and silver things. I hang ribbons down from the top and have blue and silver ball ornaments, some other stuff. Then I had kids and people started giving us special ornaments for them and my tree turned into teh mish-mash I didn’t want. So last year at the After Christmas sale, I bought each kid a 3′ tree and I have my blue and silver tree back. We are all happy this year. I let my kids decorate the bottom of my tree so all the ornaments are touching and I’ve got about 4 or 5 hanging from each branch, but it’s blue and silver, and I have no other rules, so it works for me.

  • That tree is huge! Mine looks more like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree.

  • that tree looks like something out of a department store.  very pretty.

  • No tacky plastic crap.  No tinsel.  Mostly crystal or gold.

  •  that is a very beautiful tree

  • My wife does the decorating of the tree.  I hate doing stuff like that.

  • I use to be like Ben, the kids decorated and then I went behind them and rearranged, now the kids are gone from home and I have to do it from the get-go…. no rules though…

that is a beautiful Tree, and I know you’ll have a great time in Detroit

  • Massive tree! We had a large one like that a few years back but the cat kept crawling inside it. Somehow I knew it was either going to electrocute itself or make the tree fall over. Ironically it did both, but somehow lived. I’m guessing it used about 7 of its 9 lives that night.

  • Tree rules? Doesn’t that sort of take the joy out of it?
I know when the kids were little the custom around here was put it up Thanksgiving day and take it down the weekend of the 4th.
Kinda tied all the holidays together that way.

  • That’s gorgeous! We don’t have any rules. We just try to make it look nice. My personal hangup, if you will (pun intended), is that I insist on putting candy canes on the tree. Really, in a perfect world, there would be candy hanging from everything, don’t you think?

  • Gorgeous tree…

  • I adore looking at the beautiful perfect trees, they even make me slightly jealous, my best friend has one every year. (she has rules up the wazoo) My tree will never approach perfection.  It’s impossible, I have to many ornaments in varying colors, shapes, origins for it to ever be perfect.  For instance last year one of the guys at work gave us a chinook helicopter ornament…bet your jealous now.   The there’s my brand new hand carved wooden leprechaun ornament courtesy of a very nice neighbor that knows my future son in law is Irish.  Oh and then there’s the hand-painted glass bell from the Mainz Christmas market or the pewter one from last year at Heidelberg.  Don’t get me wrong I love all of them but they are to diverse to pull off the themed tree look, but we have the joy of a story with every bauble and I’ll take that over perfection.

Have fun in Detroit and take lots of pictures. Man that tree is gorgeous!

  • Wow!  That tree is so pretty!!!!!!!!!!

  • It is a beautiful tree. We have a ritual for ours which has developed over the years. I have regular baubles, snowflakes and icicles for my tree plus ‘special’ decorations ie an old and slightly bedraggled robin given to me by my grandfather years ago, 2 that are hollow with nativity scenes that used to hang on my ex’s grandparents tree and pretty ornate ones that I bought to symbolise each happy, fulfilling year of my marriage and family. My son and ex hubby always drape the lights on the tree first. I place the robin on a top branch with a lump in my throat and a wish that my grandfathers love of Christmas may spread through my household. My ex does the same with the nativity baubles. Then the kids place the regular baubles on the tree. My ex and I place the ‘special ones’ around the branches then finally, I drape the tinsel before turning on the lights. It’s a family ritual that would mean nothing to an onlooker, but unifies us in the spirit of Christmas past and present. My sis is expecting a baby next summer, so next Christmas, there will be another ‘special’ decoration hanging on the tree to symbolise another important aspect of our family. I’m thinking an angel of some kind.

  • Why is that tree so big?  (Innocent question here)  Do people need a tree that big?  It sure is beautiful though.

    :)

    Later,

    Gina
