This time of year, more then any other, reminds me of my Gram.
She loved to have dinner parties for her family.
Prepared to the end, her food was WONDERFUL!
Heart attacks waiting to happen, butter and cream and sugar galore!
She made standing rib roast or what my sister fondly called stringy beef.
Meat so tender you could cut it with your fork.
Mmm Mashed potatoes made with heavy whipping cream, and squash,
cucumber salad and vegetable trays.
She made tasty treats too.
Fudges, peanut clusters, pinwheel date cookies,
pies - apple, cherry and peach.
Always, always… there were buckles.
A family cookie, she had a special cutter to make them.
When she passed on, my cousin got the cutter because that was her job in Gram’s late life.
I made the dough, and Brenda cut them out and fried the cookies.
Always under Grams caring supervision.
Well it’s time.
My Mamala found me a special cutter!
Almost like Grams.
So today the monsters and I make the dough.
Tomorrow there will be BUCKLES!!!
My Gram, the bathing beauty and buckle maker extraordinaire!

aw, i love old pictures.
The older photo is great.
This is the time of the year where you can look back at those who you tended to see on Thanksgiving.
What a great pic! Good luck with your buckles
Great. Now I’m hungry!!! (Nice post!)
What goes into making buckles-sounds intriguing! Love the old photo!
She kind of reminds me of Bette Midler!!!
what a cool idea- fried buckles
and what a great picture!
aw… i’m sure she’s smiling from above.
Have fun with the buckles.
ummmmm what are buckles? Fried cookies? Great gram….she’s beautiful… and does’t look like a heart attack waiting to happen. Gawd bless them med ads to put so much fear in our enjoyment.
Wonderful picture, it almost reminds me of those pinup girls on the sides of the Bombers in WWII.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…. it all sounds sooo good.
Great photograph of someone who sounds like a wonderful lady, who I’m sure, would love that you’re keeping her memory alive through your kids *hugs*
wonderful memories. thanks for sharing them
AWww, what a sweet tribute and loving legacy. My grandma used to make caramels every Christmas… awesome, butter & sugar concoctions that would rip a crown off if I had one today. But, I may try my hand at making some this year, in honor of Grandma Mohr.
Am I the only one who has no clue what a buckle is?
Love the photo btw.
Happy Tuesday Ang.
That green guitar was freakin’ sweet. And Princess Mononoke is probably my favorite movie. Screw you Akira!
Thanks. I’m not getting anything or nothin’, really. And I’m probably not going to do nothin’ either.
She was a beaut Ang!
I just bought 6 lbs of lard ass ,I mean butter to make Christmas cookies.
I love the old pic! I wish I had memories like that.
RYC: I’m going out and finding some bubble wrap as we speak…
RYC: Thanks! Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Fry the cookies???
WOW!
Thats a hell of a cookie!
stop! stop! stop! i’m starving over here!
what an awesome photo of your gram. everyone needs a pic of their gram in a bathing suit.
Now I miss my grandmas…. *sigh* Grandmother would always make each person’s favorite. She would save some of my Grandfather’s garden beans, and make them with bacon, salt and pepper. I’ve never tasted better green beans than my Grandfather’s home grown beans… *BIG sigh*
My other Grandma, whom we called Mom made the best fudge. When I got married, we lived in Califunky, because Doug was in the Army… she mailed me some our first Christmas. Oh my word, I was heaven. Of course that was back when I still loved chocolate… when I had my youngest, something just turned me from chocolate.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving! I am glad you have a new cutter! Your grandma was a beautiful lady. I am also taking out a subscription to your blog. Hugs, Tracy
angi1972 please could you give us some more details about them buckles… like which dough and procedure? I am still shellshocked because of today’s result on the scale. Too lazy to find out how many stones those kilos would be… have to think about new worms… anacondas do have too much calories… take good care, love!
how cool is that?
carry on girl, carry on!
cool photo of your gram
I miss my gran more and more every year…it just doesn’t get any easier…she was my bestest friend in life. Have fun with your new cutter!!
Yay for b&w photos!!! Ok…so my post made you want to exhibit your grad pic…and your post makes me want to pin up some awesome grandparent photos. We Rock.
…and yes, I am a tease…and yes, I know it.
I’ve never heard of buckles! You’ll have to share more about them. Some pics of the kids making them would be great too. Good Good Good for you for keeping up with family traditions. I love that. The picture is amazing, thanks for sharing. Peace
Haha what a great photo of her.
I think Thanksgiving is actually a conspiracy against weighing what you should D;
I have absolutely no idea. I think it’s the largest flower in the world, though.
hi Ang…reminds me of how my foster father (yeah, i’m more like Clark Kent, than most people will ever know…he he he) used to teach us boys to bake and cook, because he felt that this was a skill men should, and would need to know (in case the commies force us into bomb shelters…remember, i was born in ’54)…the other skill a man should know was dancing…i learned that from my real mother (an exotic dancer, no shit!!!)….i never regretted learning to cook….ok, i can dance my ass off, as well- ask Laurel!!..ryc…keep chipping away…we’d (Laurel says hi) love to see you in february… hugs…animal
Thats a beautiful blog Angi, and thanks for sharing it – I am sure you and the kids are going to have lots of fun making those cookies!
Isn’t it amazing how most of us remember our grannies for the FOOD – LOL! Sorry, but when I think of mine, some of my fondest memories of her are the things she made/baked/cooked – LOL!
Hope you have a wonderful thanksgiving Angi! HUGS!!!
RYC: I’m wearing combat boots and a football helmet to work today and Friday. I’ll see if we can get pictures of the craziness…I say we because I’m dragging Phil to work with me…the lucky guy!
Well I think you and Gram favor where’s her mustache though?)! How wonderful, these memories you’ve shared, it would be even more wonderful if you could figure out how to share the fried Buckles. Have a great Thanksgiving Ang, and if at all possible can you save me a slice of Cherry Pie? It’s my favorite!!!!!!………ilym…………Marsha
