  • I remember where I was five years ago, as I’m sure we all do.I also remember  how I felt, sick and helpless, depressed and vengeful. My first thought was we need to go in there and wipe them out.

I guess I was thinking of the Middle East. I just wanted the President to order the people responsible blown up.  And then as the day wore on and I watched the footage over and over and heard the commentary and waited for a decision to be made…were we going to war? It occurred to me that there was no obvious person or country responsible. It wasn’t like every person in Afghanistan got together and said lets attack America. There were Mothers and children there, that were probably waiting just like I was, to hear if they were going to war. That had just as much control over the situation as I did. None.

Today, I fear more for the safety of my children being taken by a stranger or running into the road. Unless I hear something on television I live in blissful ignorance of terrorism. I only have to imagine worrying about them being by a car that might blow up or stepping onto the sidewalk and into crossfire. About soldiers walking into my home and killing my family on accident because they are so fearful for their own lives, that they mistake panic at intrusion for a threat. Luckily I only have to imagine.

I hope that this post isn’t offensive to anyone. It isn’t a reflection of how I feel about war or what I think of America. I know how lucky I am to live here. And I am grateful to the men and women who defend and serve our country. I’m just being contemplative on a day that will forever be full of grief for so many people all over the world.

  • Nice post- we’re all lucky to go day-by-day without ever having to think about terrorism in our lives. I just have too many other things to worry about everyday.

  • ^ So true.

I did write it, and thanks for commenting. :)
You love NPR, I love NPR, and I was amused by the zucchini story. I’ll be coming back.

  • Wow I simply MUST be your friend! I love your profile pic (the whole reason that I clicked on your page in the first place}. I’m a huge fan of Alphonse Mucha. I also love NPR and contemplation.

Speaking of contemplation… I couldn’t have said it better!
