Yesterday, my friend Dorothy called to tell me the Pig Tree was blooming.
It happens twice a year and reminds me of my childhood.
Interesting what you see growing up in an agricultural community.
If you were driving down the road and saw this, would you find it disturbing?

…?
well that i disturbing
LOL… I’ve seen something similar but with deer.
@SerenaDante - @vexations - Sorry! I was debating on wether to put it up or not… To me it isn’t that disturbing, but it might be to someone else and I don’t want to offend anyone… But I like the picture… I guess I’m still trying to deciede if I like it enough ot leave it up…
@cre13 - Dorthy likes to tell the story about the truck full of hunters that stopped to congratulate her husband on his deer one year… she still belly laughs when she recounts that they had never actually shot a deer, so had no basis for comparison. lol
Look’s like a BBQ is around the corner.
Yep… there is no mistaking it! That pig tree is in full bloom! I hung a deer like that once. And I used to butcher rabbits on a regular basis.
dan
Now this is something I would have posted.
@TheTheologiansCafe - Your cow post reminded me of this. I gaurentee that this wasn’t done cruely though.
Awesome.
Gone have me some pork scratchings and a good lynching..
Where’s the mob of restless teenagers responsible for this!!!!
Mmmm….bacon ready?
What would PETA say?
Well, I like meat but I dont like looking at it like that xD
AAAAAA THAT’S DISTURBING
…Only a little.
But it was a good idea to warn people. Some can’t handle pics like this.
Not to be insensitive to others, but how is this disturbing? I would think the image of someone cutting a strip of meat off the pig, throwing it on a frying pan, cooking it, putting it in their sandwich and calling it a BLT would be a little more disturbing.
I guess us humans are funny that way.
click your heels three time and say “there’s no place like home”
:$
well isnt that just lovely
Yes people are a little isolated from the food they eat
DINNER!!!
(can you tell I’m a farmgirl?)
That’s interesting. I’ve seen that with deer and fish. Does it have that odd-ish smell too?
@EveryRoadisanOption - NO! This is very fresh. They don’t leave it up long enough to smell… also it was cold out… if it were warm I imagine that would make it smell… that’s probably why they do butchering in the spring and fall. Good question!
@Lithium98 - @trunthepaige - I like knowing where my food comes from… and I think in a way, it’s more respectful to what your eating… at least your assured that the animal was treated humainly… know what I mean?
why hang a pig on a tree? is this some ritual ?
@Thoughtsto1self - After you butcher a pig or anything for that matter… it is good to hang them and let them drain out… Also it’s good for the meat to sit in a cool enviroment.
hmm… well the blood is drained the carcass is gutted now i just need to skin it and find that doggone skillet.
I’ve been told i have a very disturbing and morbid sense of humor. So tell me when he tree is not in bloom does that mean it has full live pigs on it?
not at all. I like pork, ham and bacon. We just butchered a pig at work 3 weeks ago.
We also found that you can use chain falls for just about anything. We used our to hoist autos, tractors, farm implements etc. And yes, once or twice to butcher a beef. Very interesting and comment worthy!
Nope. I have done this job myself many times in my life.
reminds me of ‘east of eden’ and i’m not really sure why
erm, depends on where you see this. in some places it’s normal, in others not so much.
That’s awful but I hope it was done humainly. Honestly, why is this featured?
Looks delicious.
That makes me super sad. The piglet is my favorite animal!
bother me pffffft
I was the kid that was assigned to catch the chickens right after my uncle chopped their heads off (actually I think that was a made up job to keep me busy)
I have never seen such a thing. yes, disturbing.
Naw. We don’t have many pig trees that bloom around here, but in November the deer trees are magnificient : D. Savages. heh.
um… well I’m chinese and ashamed to admit that seeing slaughtered pigs hanging upside down wouldn’t faze me. however, the fact that it seems to be publicly displayed on a tree for all to see if I’m correct, without the purpose of food, would be quite disturbing. my point is if it is food, killing a pig is unfortunate but its kill or be killed (or go vegan) sometimes in this world but to kill for the fun of it and put it up for display is despicable.
so what is the story to this “pig tree” really?
Disturbing is an understatement. One of the reasons I don’t like venison is that the hunters in the family brought the deer home and hung them in the garage and then preceeded to cut them up….yuck, yuck, yuck! I like my meat to come in neat little packages from the super market…thank you very much.
Yes, I would find it rather disturbing and I would probably hit my gas pedal extra hard.
Not disturbing at all. Some might be surprised to be walking along, turn the corner have this come into sight but not disturbing. Disturbing to me is when kids don’t know where eggs come from or that ham comes from pigs….
No, I wouldn’t find it disturbing, but I grew up in SW Oklahoma. I never did see pigs hanging from a tree, but it wouldn’t have surprised me.
i’m chinese so i’ve seen a lot of dead hanging pigs. so, sadly, it’s not disturbing to me. now if it were people…
In KC, there used to be stockyards, but I’ve never seen anything hanging from the trees! :-p
Kathi
Naw … I grew up going to the butcher shop where I saw this kind of thing all the time. I wonder why it was there, since I am not used to seeing them in a tree though
somewhat disturbing if you have never seen anything like it before. ‘Round these here parts, it’s deer you see hanging like this. Since I have never seen a pig tree in bloom before, yeah, a bit disturbing, but doable. : )
Yeah, slightly creepy.
Sounds like the beginning of a horror movie. o.O
Nope ,I would stop to see how much it is per pound!!!
All I see is a pig roast around the corner! Pass the BBQ sauce and slaw please!
No…my dad use to hang deer like that, but in the garage and I would watch him skin and gut them…
Nope. I grew up in the country, too. My Dad always hung his deer up. (If he were lucky enough to get one!) We also butchered our own meat. Chickens, rabbits, beef, etc. It doesn’t start out all pretty wrapped in plastic sitting on Styrofoam!
that’s creepy and disturbing. i wouldn’t wanna stop to find out what was going on. too afraid to end up like the pigs.
What is that? I’ve never seen or heard of anything remotely like this, and yes, I would definitely freak out if I was driving down the road and happened to pass a “pig tree”.
Yes, it IS disturbing.
OH.MY.GOD
bless me father for I have sinned.
That is yuckie.
sorry but to me that’s like when Dan put the entry up about the lady that stomps kittys with high heels.
My curiosity got the best of me.
Damn you curiosity!
Yes I probably would. I live in the country and am a meat eater, two of my brothers work at the abattoir in the next town. All though hearing about it and knowing it goes on opposed to seeing something like this (as clean as it may be) is a little disheartening for me. It makes me think of the poor animals who sole purpose on this earth is to feed us and help with our land and clothe us. What they went through for us to have a slab of meat on our plate. Sometimes the quantity doesn’t add up. Sorry I have gone off and gotten side tracked with my rant.
Yes! I would find it offensive I guess I am one of the shallow ones who would rather know it exists then forget all about it.
)
I would be surprised to drive by and see pigs hanging like that from a tree.
Not a bit disturbing. I’m a Ky farm boy. Helped butcher a few hogs myself when I was younger.
I’m a city girl….I’ve never seen anything like that other than in butcher shops in other countries. If it were in the car driving and saw that, I don’t think I would be disturbed as much as confused. It would be more like WTF?
Definitely so!
I’m with you on knowing that the meat is going to be good and that the meat was treated with respect.
justme
cm
it’s a bit disturbing but reminds me also of growing up. When I was a kid, the neighbor would string his deer up like that in the tree outside my bedroom window. I woke up from a nap one day and looked out the window to find him slicing the deer right down the middle while the head was looking right at me. blech!!
I live in Delaware, this is the kind of thing we hang from out trees:
Woman Hanging From Tree Mistaken for Halloween Decoration
No, there aren’t pictures but you get the point.
It’s a little disturbing, due to the way the pigs are hung (the chains make it look a little sadomasochist) - however anyone who eats meat or had bought from a butcher wouldn’t find this totally shocking to look at. I think vegetarians and animal lovers would be grossed out by it.
….. I grew up thinking the term “killer frost” meant the day they had the pig slaughter…… It is sometimes hard to actually “see” where our food comes from….. farm life made me nearly vegan………… ~Echo
not really…I’d want to know when the bacon was going to be ready and above all if they were going to use natural casings on the sausage, if so, leave them off mine.
awesome. if you drive down my road and look under my willow tree during deer gun season thats what my tree will look like. Thats not disturbing, that just makes me ready to get out the grill!! yeahaaw for rednecks!!
it doesn’t bother me, i like spare ribs and pork chops too much ! oh yeah, and bacon goes great with eggs.
Nope, but then again I grew up with a “deer tree”.
As long as the meat is going to be eaten it doesn’t bother me a bit. That’s how your meat looks before it’s cut into sections folks. No different than fishing and killing the fish; just bigger, that’s all.
Those pigs are going to be OK aren’t they?
That definitely disturbs me…. o_O
I’ve never heard or seen a pig tree before until now. lol i don’t know what to say about it.
How do you know when they’re ripe and ready, these pig-fruit?
i grew up in southern CA and i found this very disturbing. at least they set up the bbq grills under so i could imagine bbq ribs.
No doubt I would!
@TheTheologiansCafe - I agree, to the morbid community this is something pretty wonderful. If I had a picture of this, I absolutely would’ve posted it too, minus the warning.
It depends where I was…in the middle of agriculture country, no not disturbing. In a suburban community, slightly disturbing – or out of place at least haha. Doesn’t bother me though…
um… I definately would stop and look twice.
No, there is nothing more disturbing about that than the brisket and bacon in the supermarket shelves…
Maybe if they did it in Central Park…
I don’t think it’s disturbing. But, of course, I used to watch my dad gut deer in the backyard. Also I have a faint memory of watching my dad skin squirrels on the back porch when I was about three. I would stand out there with a rag over my nose and mouth because it smelled so bad, but I still wanted to watch him.
Oh growing up in the south…
If I were driving down the road and I saw that… I’d stop to introduce myself.
Not disturbing. Even though I choose not to eat meat, I don’t see anything wrong with it when it’s raised humanely and butchered painlessly. When my cousin brings his own pasture grown, aged beef to the family reunion I turn into a guiltless carnivore. When I look at the cuts of meat in the grocery store I think of feed lots, disease, and cruelty.
0_o
lol Eww.
I am a vegetarian, so yes.
My dad does that… except with deer and in his garage, so i don’t really find that disturbing…
Yea, I would.
Nup, I would think…………. mmmmmmmm bacon!
yes i would find it disturbing. i would also take a picture of it, like you did.
I have to admit I would be a little bit, but only because I’ve been so urbanized. But having grown up (for about 9 years) in Vietnam, this doesn’t really disturb at all (in that shudders-running-through-my-body kind of way.)
Not disturbing.
I eat meat.
Not that I’d want to go out and kill my own pig, but come on now.
Suddenly I’m hungry for pork.
I would have definitely grimaced but it’s not like the grocery store doesn’t have things like this… Plus, it looks absolutely clean and not like roadkill.
I must admit however I have never seen pig carcasses hanging out in the open like this. Hey, maybe vegetables have feelings?
natural chiller!
That is disgusting!!!!! LOL
Herb Viagra online is a response to a very silly misinterpretation that have been over ten years ago. Today, emergency rooms all over the country battle with how to help people who have taken cheap Viagra that they were not prescribed. IIf you come with an ailment related to taking some fake kind of generic Buy Cialis , they may not know how to treat you.
