  • Beans, beans, the musical fruit, the more you eat…

    backery condensation

    Condensation on the bakery window.

I just thought it looked cool.

I heard on the radio today that oil is at 70 dollars a barrel and could drop as low as 20 dollars a barrel.

I think that would bring it down to less the a dollar a gallon.

My first memory of gas prices I was six. I remember my parent’s discussing the price of gasoline…

How expensive it was getting. It was .99 cents a gallon.

I remember my friend Gabe lifting the hose and shaking it into the tank. I laughed at him and  he said “What? There’s still at least three cents of gas in the hose.” We had just started driving and depended on pop can returns for gas money. That day  it was at 1.25 a gallon.

Right now gas here is 1.79 a gallon, the last time it was that low was four years ago when one of my brother-in-laws was visiting us. He asked me to stop at the gas station so that he could take a picture of the price,  he wanted to show his friends how expensive it was here.

I’m finding it a little scary that I have so many memories of fuel prices…

What’s the price of a gallon in your neck of the woods?

What’s the lowest you remember a gallon of gas costing?

  • Gas locally was at $1.67 at one place we passed today. I can remember it being .24 a gallon when I was a small child.

  • $1.60 – This is actually the chepeast I ever remember it being. I’m one of those now strange individuals without any gas price memories.

  • I just paid $1.49 a gallon here.  I think that is just about what it was when I first started driving.  Certainly accounting for inflation it is cheaper than when I started driving.

The cheapest I remember ever seeing was I think $0.90 a gallon back in the mid 90′s.

  • it was 1.64 here. when I first started driving it was .39.

really. I almost had a stroke when it jumped up over .50 back in the 70′s. I was on a road trip and darn near didn’t have enough money to get home

  • The cheapest around here was $1.99.  I was thrilled.

I remember gas at 28 cents a gallon.  Hard to believe.  And I am not ancient.  *wink*

  • It’s $1.72 here right now. Lowest I ever paid was 18 cents a gallon in Nebraska in 1968. But there was a price war going on.Remember those?

  • I think it’s 1.79 here, too, but then I’m not so far from you.

I remember it being in the 35 cents range.

  • We’re being charged 1.99 locally. Somehow I can remember it being in the .70s on family vacation in ’72. But that may be mistaken, it only really shot up with the oil embargo of ’73.

  • When I first glanced at the photo, I thought it was some kind of a plant – coz your headline “beans” gave me that idea first! It’s a great shot, Angi :)

  • Beans beans the magical fruit. the more you eat, the more you toot. the more you toot, the better you feel, so eat some beans at every meal. My FIL loved that ditty.

When we got married, Doug was stationed in Ca. I remember us driving the 1700 mile trip and being outraged that gas was 86 cents the further west we got! That was 1986,

It is 1.84 tonight at the Pilot down the street.

  • OK, when I was in high school, gas was an unwavering 4 gallons for a dollar. The cheapest I remember was buying it for $.18 a gallon in Buffalo, New York the year I got married (the first time). That would have been 1961. We were driving a 1936 Ford.

  • Gas here, today, is $ 1.85. every day it drops a few cents. When I came to this country in 1967, gas was $ 0. 30 cents per gallon; and we could go to the next gas station and it would be five cents cheaper there. We also got sets of beautiful glasses or plate, steak knives, and numerous other things, just for filling the tank up with regular gas, plus a free car wash.

  • The last time I filled up (Sunday 11-16) it was $1.81/gal…When I was just a young thing (too young to drive), we always went to the Texaco station on Wheeling Ave. The cost was $0.23 and with every fill up you got a different drinking glass with Bugs Bunny (and cohorts). We collected quite a few before that promotion ended. Which was a good thing because we broke a lot of glasses. There were lots of promotions just like Zsa_MD wrote, but since I was young I didn’t pay much attention…The only other one I recall was for dish towel sets. I remember drying dishes with those.

  • $1.84 Today. Somebody made a lot of money during the past few years. With the drop in price, the tax man will get less and I bet he is not too happy about a drop in tax earnings so the tax will have to be adjusted in some way….

  • Love the pic.  the window is crying.  lol Hugs MOM…..

  • I paid $1.87 for gas earlier this week! That was in Frederick, MD.

  • I totally think that gas is right where it is supposed to be based on inflatation…don’t get me wrong..if it goes under a dollar I will be visitng you a LOT more…but seriously isn’t that a lot to ask….Pretty soon, money is goign to grow on trees…hahahaha

  • it’s 1.59 here and continuing to fall at a pretty fast pace

it was .74 when i started driving

  • Current Price 2.09 a gallon

Lowest I remember?  99 cents a gallon back when I got my driver’s license.

Aw for the days it only cost ten bucks to fill my tank!

I sure hope everything in your neck of the woods is good, and btw I love your condensation pics!

  • Lovely picture. My first memory of gas was watching uncles sucking long tubes, then syphoning it out of the petrol tank during maintenance to their cars.

  • It really does look cool..  I especially love the angle/// a slight tilt,  with some lazy sun

  • there will always be inflation

  • we are at 1.70 somthing.

  • Ang, I’m not that much older than you, and I remember $.34/gal. I also remember my sisters and their friends pooling their money, coming up with 50 cents, and putting enough gas in the tank to drive to the mall, cruise Burger Chef and still leave enough gas to keep mom happy. Neat pic, by the way.

  • mornin glorie….when I started driving it was .25 ( I started driving before I was 16 tho) and it’s 1.99 in town today….the girl that runs the gas station charges what ever the tanker charges until that tank runs out – so maybe the next time she has her tanks filled up it will be even cheaper….toot toot…

    I love the photo….ilym

  • $1.79 down in Portland.  It’s even cheaper in some of the neighboring cities.  I hope the gas stays low.

  • I’d bet that the guy who was praying for lower gas prices has stopped praying…

California has a higher gas price (over $2.00) because of their taxes and special gas formula. Usually Hawaii has the highest gas prices but it is lower than California now….

I don’t exactly remember the gas prices in the 60′s but it was around 33 cents. I remember though a dollar could get you enough gas to drive around town.

The politicians are planing to keep the prices high, to subsidize other fossil fuel substitutes. Those darn Chinese and Indians will use their share of fossil fuels so the resource is limited.

  • i don’t remember what the lowest i’ve ever seen was, but i’m liking the below $2 i’m getting now :D

  • Am I the only one that noticed? .99 cents = $.0099. That’s even cheaper than we paid on the farm in 1949.(It was 15 cents a gallon then -[ that's $.15])

  • I try not to think about the cost of gas… I would rather think about the cost of something more pleasant… like cider. Alas I don’t even know what cider costs …

  • @Aloysius_son - It ain’t cheap! When I bought some from the mill this fall is was almost six dollars for a gallon!

  • Hello Stranger.. Petrol (I cant get used to saying gas) is about £1.03p over here at the moment. I was in Vegas over the summer and have decided that I much prefer your side of the pond though!! (Maybe Vegas is not the typical demographic on which to base my decision to emmigrate however!) xx

  • LOVE this pic, Angi!
