When world’s collide
We made our way towards Mackinaw county yesterday.
The goal was to get a cache in each county.
We ran into a cache that gave us issues.
Could you get your arm in that hole?
Neither could we!
The monsters even tried!
Finally Pop dug a hole at the bottom of the tree and D stuck her hand up through the roots to pull it out.
The things they won’t do to get a find!
There it is… that little pill bottle.
Was it worth it?
Yeah, but I wasn’t doing the digging.

At the same cache we found a letterbox!
Letterboxing is the precursor to Geoching and requires less equipment and no GPS.
These are some of what you will find in a Letterbox… Stamps! Of course!
In a geocache you sign a log and leave…
Your calling card… it’s a little different.
I had my own bird chasers yesterday!
No running around like a crazy lady for me!
I would have had them chase this one, but the mosquitos would have carried them away!
We made it to the bridge…
and across and then back again.
It was a long day, but a good one.
The world’s of Letterboxing and Geocaching collide once again and survived.
If you don’t have the money for a GPS check out Letterboxing!

I’ve done letterboxing once up in the local mountains. It was hidden under this massive bush with lots of spiders (!!!!!!!). We left our thumbprints as we didn’t hae a stamp. We meant to do another one that required a hike out to a pioneer cemetery but we ran out of time.
The letterboxing looks like it’s pretty cool!
Love love love the the bridge
Wow…now see…Xanga isn’t a “waste of time” as some would say. I just learned something new.
Btw…what of bird?
Great pics, too.
@LifeNeedsProtection - Oops! Sorry I think it’s a Sand Hill Crane… there where a pair, but they wouldn’t stand together! lol I even asked nicely! lol
Great fun
first time I’ve heard of letterboxing! I’m thinking of taking a roadtrip up to the Traverse City and the U.P. before the summer is over.
My dad has taken the walk across that bridge.
SO COOL!
Where can i find information on letterboxing?
So, what kind of GPS do you have to have for geo-caching? My hubby just got the standard Tom-Tom commercial model; would that work?
I loved the photos! This is a great post!
@LifeNeedsProtection - I just learned something new too!
The bird chasers shot is gorgeous!
And if not for you, I’d have no idea what geocaching or letterboxing is.
Always great fun
Merry Frey Day!
I’d never heard of letterboxing! To me, a letterbox is a huge cardboard box in my basement, with all my notes from jr. high on, letters, etc! LOL You know, before there were computers! :-p
Love all your pictures!
Kathi
Geocaching is fun stuff! Have you tried wheresgeorge.com?
That is very cool. Is it a website that tells you where to go?
I have a niece who has walked the Mackinaw Bridge, and I would love to do that one day on the one day a year you can. And the bird is a sandhill crane, I am so jealous! Were you that close, or good zoom on the camera?
Another adventure! I love the shot of the boys running after the bird by the lake. What a glimpse of what it means to be a kid. Kudos to you for taking the kids out so much to explore. These are memories they’ll never forget — and believe me, since I work with kids all over the place — not many parents are giving kids open-ended experiences like these. Awesome!
Oh, and letterboxing to me is seeing a movie in its original wide-screen format! (Guess I’ve turned into an indoor adventurer!)
That sounds like fun and I will have to check it out!
Lovely shot of the bridge. I don’t like to cross it; I prefer to admire it while sipping a pina colada at a sidewalk cafe on Mackinac Island.
The first bridge shot is Travel guide book good!
Glad you had fun,I have all three kids today and I am gonna close shop and stamp with them!
haha lol thats so kool that u even bother going to a cem to find all those stuff
i basically live in the cem.. lol i spent almsot all my time in there
soo yah good luck on watever ur doing
That is just so cool! I love the photo of the crane.
@prairiecowboy - @TheTheologiansCafe - We are talking about doing the walk this year… I can’t wait! I can only Imagine the great pictures I could get… I wonder how much of a pain it would be to take a ladder so I could stand above everyone for some shots… hmmm… lol
@prairiecowboy - They were about twenty feet from me… there were two… I asked them to stand together for me but they wouldn’t!
I have several other good shots of them I’ll save for a rainy day. I was eaten alive while getting them though, today I am using the Afterbite all over! lol
@happydeviant - I know you would LOVE letterboxing or geocaching… The geocachers do ALL kinds of crazy things, and the places that it takes you too… the video possibilities are ENDLESS!

That is the home page for letterboxing…
http://www.geocaching.com/
That is the Geocaching site…
Let me know what you think!
@Shirlann - Any GPS will work, but one that you can view the maps on is more fun… because then you can upload the caches to it and see them as your driving around. lol You would be AMAZED at how many are out there…
http://www.geocaching.com/
GO there and it will tell you how to get started… I think you guys would like it… I don’t have the patience to be hard core about it like my sister, but I like going to the events, like the flash mobs and doing Earth caches, which are ones you just go to a cordinates site and take your picture or answer questions about it… No digging in the dirt. lol
Hellboy and Wanted
I love that landscape pic of your boys running towards the birds.
I’ve always wanted to try letterboxing or geocaching (well, since I found out about them a couple of years ago), but never seem to get around to it. It requires going outside on the weekends. Perhaps I’ll get inspired from your posts.
I haven’t tried either, but they sound like a blast. I think we’ll try it when my daughter is a little older. I love the bird photographs.
It looks like a good day indeed!!! I love the Mackinaw area! The kids look like they are having as much fun as the adults are!!! That one bird is beautiful, wonder what it is???? I never heard of letter-boxing, I will look it up on Google when I leave here!!!
As always Angi, I love your photos!!!!
I hate mosquitoes. My brother and I ended up in a dive in Venice, Italy and spent all night killing the mosquitoes in our room…
Gee, you must be really busy in the realm of xanga.
I dedicated my previous post to you and seedsower and you never even stopped by…
*sniff, sniff* *blows nose* *wipes a tear from his eye*
it’s awesome you guys have this fun together as a family
I tried but GPS is too technical for me. I can find places but I wanted to upload my waypoints to my computer..got the cord and everything…I figured out how to do the internet just about on my own…but I’m just dum about some things.
hi thank you for the comment and the stars on my picture. i am so excited i never had a photo starred before i didnt even know what they were for =) i love your bridge pictures very very cool and letterboxing sounds like a lot of fun. my boy is a birdchaser to =D
It’s interesting. I think you had learnt lots during the trip (or a game? I’ve played a game which is similar to this during our school picnic).
Hi there.. I think I’ve been to your blog before.. think so anyway.. if not… HELLO!!
I have never heard of Letterboxing! DH and I want to get into geocaching but haven’t yet… just gotta DO IT!! love your pics…
WOW! I have WANTED to letterbox, prepared, but just didn’t happen…..yet! AWESOME. omg reaching down those channels….sigh. nice group.
Looks like a wonderful time was had by all. What a great idea for getting the kids out and enjoying themselves. Have a great weekend lady xx
I can’t say i have ever done anything of that nature but it looks cool as anything.
And i love the bird picture. It looks like it has been dipped in fence varnish. Very odd little thing.
You got some nice shots there!! I haven’t done any geocaching yet here in Florida – but I am starting to scope it out and might be able to sneak one or two in today if I am lucky… Looks like you guys had fun, at least!!
Now this looked like fun. Your sister is turning your father into a hard core cacher for sure. Jay is off this morning doing some caches before breakfast. Then we are off to the park with Kim for some hiking. – Miss you all.
I’ve found a couple letterboxes while searching for geocaches, and done a couple hybrid ones that are both letterboxes and geocaches. Interesting that they sometimes get hidden in almost the same place. Glad you had fun, and the pictures, as I knew they’d be, are gorgeous.
I just spent two weeks in Michigan! Congrats on your trip!
Hope you are having a fun Saturday! *hugs*
I have got to get another GPS!
Even if I could get my arm down that hole I would’nt
The cherry festival sounds like fun, if we could only afford to travel agian!
Nice blog, Angi.It must be a lot of fun and you have documented it well.
I like very much the panoramic photo of the two children running towards the sea and the gulls flying .
Cache ? Surprising what we can find in !
Love
Michel
hehe, the boys are so cute. And that bird sure looks scary! The letterbox things looks very cool ‘:D
That looks like alot of fun, but man I would not have put my hand in the hole for nothing hehe
