My samples of the area cuisine.

(Beth isn’t fond of scrapple, but she was kind enough to let me try it.)

He was kind enough to let me take his picture.

I actually yelled at him and asked if I could, he said sure go ahead.

Beth is rubbing off on me, she always asks.

I am usually a sneaker, shoot and run.

    I didn’t ask her…

    or

    Him…

    or

    These two.

    How rude of me.

Oh and here is something I was working on I couldn’t show you guys.

I wanted to give Beth something she could put in her garden, see it, and think of me.

So what says ANGI more then…

A big cheesy toad with blue eyes.

Maybe I should have given him a beard.

It was killing me not to do progress report posts on him!

I will have to do those later, better late then never.

    Tomorrow it’s off to NYC!

We are having a GREAT time! Thanks for all of the wishes.

We haven’t been arrested yet, so our trouble can’t be that bad… that or we haven’t been caught!

    Be safe!

  • Haven’t been arrested yet?… That is because you haven’t made it to Nyc yet… Great pictures, btw.

    dan =)

  • …word on the street is that your making a guest appearance at the Xanga offices.

I do hope you have a good time.

  • Scrapple is great, isn’t it?    I ate a half pound last week.

  • I’m a sneaker too.  Lovin the frog and I bet Beth does too!  You guys have fun at Xanga tomorrow :)

  • I’ve had chess pie — but not shoo fly pie.  Looks good, though.

And that toad looks so regal.  I think it needs a crown — or a tiara . . .

  • i’m with seedsower on the scrapple but that pie looks quite yummy…
    have fun in nyc!

  • Sounds like you are having a GREAT visit. Makes me look forward all the more for the tentative trip that mom and I are planning for that way next spring. :)

    Hugs’n'Smooches!

  • I’m laying bets you haven’t been caught

  • I love these updates. Looks like you’re having a blast! great photos Ang!

  • Give Beth a big hug for me.

  • what the fudge is scrapple and shoo fly pie? i see it, but i don’t understand it. some strange stuff goin on there

  • Yum country food! Great shots!

  • That’s a wonderful froggie! I hate scrapple! EWWW! My Dad was PA. Dutch, and I have tried almost all the cuisine from that area. How about pickled pig’s feet?   Have fun in NYC. My youngest daughter lives in the  Bushwick area of Brooklyn, but don’t go there! Most cabs won’t even take you there after dark! LOL! +

  • I am so glad you guys are having a good time- and that froggy is gorgeous…although you’re right, he shoulda had a beard!  You know, if he wasn’t so heavy, I’d make you post me one – LOL!
Love u Angi!  Be safe on your journeys!

  • Okay, I will be the only one, I guess, to say: I LOVE SCRAPPLE!  Especially fried crispy.  I don’t eat it often, because I’m sure it’s food that would kill you if you ate it every day.  And aren’t the Amish farms and farmers picturesque?  No matter how many times I pass one out in the field with a team of horses pulling a plow, I still point it out to my daughter.  My favorite Amish scene, though, was the time I passed a group of Amish teens out playing volleyball in their plain clothes.  You know what I think the world needs?  An Amish detective series.  Think of it: Jacob Stoltzfus — Private Eye!  Have fun in NYC.

  • Oh Angi the Frog is soooooo beautifull…….you did a awesome job he does need a crown and a beard …you will have to doctor the pic up when you get home…lol …I lov you and miss you .  Glad your having so much fun you deserve to have a awesome time.  Can’t wait to see you when you get home Lov ya…MOM…………

  • Love all the pics – sounds like you are having a great time, minus the scrapple.  Bleck.  I want one of those toads for my yard!!!!!!!    Have a great time in NYC, can’t wait to see the pictures.  I grew up near there and miss “going into the City.”

  • OH I absolutely adore scrapple.  Fried on the crispy side and spiced just right (there are a lot of different recipes I have found) and served with catsup and eggs of course.   Wonderful.

The best shoe-fly pie is a wet bottom and it should be warmed up and served with a generous helping of whipped cream (ice cream if you are so minded).  My favorite shoe-fly pie is at Shady Maple Smorgasbord (which is in an of itself an experience) which they serve at breakfast!  YEE-HA!

    /ˈskræpəl/Pronunciation KeyShow Spelled Pronunciation[

    skrap

    -

    uh

l]–noun Pennsylvania Dutch Cookery. cornmeal mush mixed with pork scraps, seasoned with onions, spices, herbs, etc., and shaped into loaves and sliced for frying.

The Germans have a variant on this substituting oatmeal for the cornmeal.

Shoofly pie (or shoo-fly pie) is a molasses pie considered traditional among the Pennsylvania Dutch and also known in Southern cooking.

The more common version of the recipe — sometimes referred to as
“wet bottom” — consists of a layer of sweet, gooey molasses beneath a
crumb topping sometimes compared to that of a coffee cake. In contrast, a “dry bottom” shoofly pie is more thoroughly mixed into a cake-like consistency.

The dessert has earned quite a reputation in the “Dutch Country” of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where its distinctive flavor and texture is quite alluring to tourists.

  • I know shoo-fly pie… but what’s scrapple?

The frog is gorgeous!  you can always add a “fake” beard for the holidays.  I know people who have a goose and dress it for the holidays in little goose outfits.  Maybe the frog can get a costume beard for your next visit!  Can’t wait to hear about how the frog came to be!

  • Mmmm..scrapple.  I love scrapple.

  • Pics are wonderful!  The toad is gorgeous!!!!  Glad you guys are having some fun!!!!  ‘We haven’t been arrested yet..’  YET being the operative word ~ yeah

  • those are awesome!!

  • So did you like the Scrapple? Just the name sort of turns me off. Shoo fly pie sounds good though. Love the photos! Especially the cute pair of squirrels. And the frog is adorable!

  • Wow, that frog is fabulous, what a whimsical and awesome gift.  Sounds like you two are having a blast.
As for scrapple, I like how it smells as it cooks, but I can’t eat it.  The texture is strange.  But shoo-fly pie, that’s another story.  Good stuff!
I’ll watch the NY news channel, maybe you and Beth will make the evening report!

  • @bonzojferardi - Shady Maple!  I’ve been there!  I always get the BBQ lima beans, I can’t eat them any other way.  And the assortments of bread just send me into a carb lover’s swoon.

  • oooh… I’m not sure of scrapple either. But the shoofly pie looks good.

  • Gorgeous pics. Have a great trip!

  • Cool photos!

    I like scrapple!

    I love your toad!

    Hugs, Tracy

  • Great photos as always! Absolutely love love love the frog!! What the heck is scrapple and shoofly pie?

  • here’s to not getting caught – and frogs

  • That frog is AWESOME! You take the best pictures. I feel like an idiot, I’ve never heard of scrapple? What is it? I don’t even know what shoefly pie is.

  • That frog is beautiful!!! I know Beth will love having that beauty in her garden!!!

It does look like you both are having a great time!!! Be safe and have fun!!!!

  • Your photos always are amazing , Ang ! and the humor goes with them
    Love           Michel

  • Skimmed thru the comments, didn’t see an answer, so I’m gonna ask too:  WHAT IS SCRAPPLE???  Shoo-fly pie is yummy though.  Haven’t had any in forever.

  • What’s scrapple????   LOL

I love the toad!  I need one of those!

  • Great  pictures and sounds like you are having loads of fun.  Love the toad.  Hope you have also got pictures of doors to share with us when you return.  Enjoy the rest of your trip and try to stay out of trouble for the remainder, or at least be able to run faster than those chasing you.  Hugs.

  • Glad you’re still on the run.Frogtastic frog.I WAS bamboozled by the food, but the comments have cleared that up!Keep having a smashing time….and by the way I’M a sneaker too!!

  • That frog is awesome! I will be in NY June 28. I wish we could hook up. Never had scrapple. What is it?

  • Many many years ago I lived in Pennsylvania Dutch country and I remember scrapple…but I never acquired a taste for it…The Shoo Fly pie in our area was either wet (like the one in the picture) or dry…There was chicken pot pie – a stew of sorts with squares of pastry floating on top of it as it bubbled in a pot…cracker pudding oh and corn pudding (THAT was yummy!)…at any rate, as I use up all this space going down Memory Lane, I do hope you’re well and enjoying your trip! ~ Jeanne

  • I want to try shoo fly pie. I have a recipe. I absolutely love the toad.
    Keep having fun.

  • Ang hope you ARE having a good time.  I heard a news report yesterday it went something like this.

Two YOUNG women found wandering the Pennsylvania country side with nothing but scrabble and shoo fly pie in their pockets.  When asked where they were heading they keep repeating some foreign word that sounded like Xanga and HQ’s.  We believe they are trying to communicate that they want to be taken to our leaders.  One woman was carrying a fantastic looking toad, however, it was certainly not native to this area!!!

On another note, we go to the Detroit Michigan area for a report from the Ford Dealership there who says that they can not explain what possessed a young man to disrobe in their showroom and keep saying My name is not party boy its Cooper.

We will keep you informed of his well being, back to you.  Have a good night from Mary’s reporting service.

    Love you Ang

  • Stunning pictures.
