It’s a Shrew Story
Yesterday I caught a shrew. I did, she was taking a leisurely stroll through my kitchen, making her way here and there. This is not the first time the wild has invaded our house. It happens far more often then I like. It’s never fun things either, like rabbits or birds. It’s always bats or field mice, and yes, the occasional shrew. Cooper and I had just returned from the grocery store and one of our green bags was on the floor. The nosy little miss decided to snoop inside and I scooped her up and hollered for the kids to get the critter keeper.
One thing I learned early on is that if you put something in a critter keeper the kids will automatically want to keep it… (Nope not going to happen!) So we sat watching the shrew. The kids fondly talking to it and suggesting names to each other and me planning her demise. I decided to do the easy painless thing, I would get Ben to do it.
I yahooed and told him what I had captured and he said he would take care of it when he got home.
So I sat, working in my photoshop and cruising the internet and watching the little shrew scramble frantically for her life, determined to find a way out. I told Ben he might not have to kill it, she might give herself a heart attack. I felt cruel and uncaring, and I wanted her dead! Ben suggested covering her with a towel so I wouldn’t have to witness her frantic scramble.
As I was covering the cage with the towel, something told me I shouldn’t do it. Who knows what scheming her tiny brain would do under the cover of darkness. Once again I ignored that still small voice and took pity on her little soul, covered the keeper and shooed the kids way.
All was quiet for awhile and I thought perhaps, she is resigned to her fate. I went back to work on my computer when all of a sudden the towel jumped into the air as the lid from the keeper popped open under it.
I screamed like a girl, (of course) and ran to push the top down, but I was too late, a tiny shrew nose was peeking out from under the towel. I grabbed it hoping to catch her all of the time doing my icky ew icky ew dance. But she flew out of the towel and onto the ground. Still feeling threatened by the two inch piece of fur… HEY have you ever seen the teeth on those things?! I grabbed the critter keeper and slammed it onto the ground repeatedly screaming and jumping around while the kids yelled encouragement in the back ground, for me or the shrew? I’m not sure which.
It was all for nothing, my dance failed to impress as she fled the room living to tell the tale of the crazy lady in the kithen. I have never felt like Mr. MacGregor more then I did yesterday.

I would have liked to see the icky ew icky ew dance
And I’ve never seen a shrew in my life. All I can imagine when I think of the word “shrew” is Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew!
I would of screamed like a girl too. ewww. Never seen one in real life but they look icky all rodent like in pictures.

I have never wanted to kill something so badly! lol
@angi1972 - OH YUCK. No wonder you danced that dance. It looks horrible.
Shrews are scary animals, if you’re an earthworm. I think you had the size advantage over it, but i would have loved to see that dance
that’s a pretty funny story…
I’m interested in seeing that dance too!!!
ttfn…
Now here’s a tale not nearly long enough. Delightful. Hurray for the shrew! (beast one/won, humans, nothing!) ((laughing)) Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks, Angi.

I had to look at that link. Uck. I always love your pictures, but I think I am glad you did not take pictures of it. Did you ever get that thing out of your house? I hope so.
I wish one of the kids would have captured your icky ew dance tho… that would have been fun to see!
LMFAO… I would have paid money to be there. *chuckles*
we used to find snakes in our house all the time, I don’t know how they got there, but thy did…
They* even
yeah, I would have freaked as well… they aren’t very cute are they?
I’m doing the icky ew icky ew dance in my chair just reading this! Yikes! I’ve had a shrew in my house before and they are definitely scary. I didn’t wait for my hubby to dispose of it though. Once I caught him I did it myself! *shudder*
@WakeUpLaughing - I was too chicken at first.. but when it was running around my feet… I had no qualms about weilding a hard plastic case to crush her with. lol I’m glad I didn’t get her though oh what a mess that would have been to clean up! lol
lol, great story, i too wanna see the icky ew dance
hahah, if only you had a video to capture that moment.
Really though, did you get pics of the shrew?
@mahz - I didn’t… I wanted to kill it not memorialize it! lol I know odd coming from me… Miss picture addict. lol

That’s what she looked like.
@angi1972 - oh, that picture made me ack.
@mahz - LOL I’m sorry! Now you see why I was doing the icky dance! lol

I’m glad he/she got away
)
Adorable story…. I love the surreal…..I want to live there all the time
Laughing outloud.
If it makes you feel any better Ang, Shrews can not last more than 24 hours without water so if you make sure it has no access, it will end up perishing..then its a matter of figuring out where the wee corpse is. No worries thoug, they do not smell. It’s just a shock when you do a deep clean and find it under your fridge or stove.
Ok I have to google it – What the hell is a schrew? I am afraid to know?
And what was your dog doing all the while:)?
you yahooed? Strange…
SO now you have two shrews living in your house? I mean did it leave your house?
You house becomes a Noah arch welcoming to the wild animals, Ang , ….and you are the charming dove !
Love {v]

PS / Some friends put comments on my old blog of 2002 ( garden door ) directly . I have the impression to age young !!!!
screaming like a girl is never out of place, it always adds to the ambiance of crushed shrew. The whole family of them will be back, when they’re short of excitement!
I did the icky dance too!! AGH!!! I don’t know what a shrew looks like– I have to google it!
@prairiecowboy - HA! I thought of that after I tried to crush her, I was glad I hadn’t because then I would have had to clean it up! lol

@jfwclark - Cute? CUTE? Have you seen the teeth on them?! Vicious!
I LOVE PETER RABBIT – had EVERYTHING Beatrix Potter as a child, and would you believe, I still have the entire collection of books which has been inherited from me by my children!
Shoulda tamed it.
I can do the “ew” dance too…
Do snakes eat shrews? You should work on the icky dance, if it looks like a boa constrictor it might scare them away…
@OwenHiggins - REALLY?
I can’t imagine you doing the EW dance! lol
I like animals best outside. Animals on the inside, (except for ones designed to live in a cage, like fish and snakes) don’t make me happy. I’m sure I would have had the same reaction as you!
I’m sorry I think shrews are adorable. But then I think mice are too, and gerbils and hamsters and sometimes even rats. Okay I’m a freak. Glad you got it out of the house though at least if not deader then a doornail.
)
that is too funny-I woulda paid good money to see that dance.
why kill it? don’t you have a nosey neighbor somewhere that you could drop it off at?
trust me, when we were relocating our possum family, I had one come to mind -but I just couldn’t do that to possums. might of been worth the drive for a shrew tho
I’m glad the poor thing got away..I just hope she doesn’t die in your house-lol!
RE: pic EEEEEWWWWWWWWW! That’s a glorified RAT!!!
OK it is unanimous we want a recreation of the icky dance! Just in case you are interested it is 40 for the dispose of the ugly little bugger and one glad he got away! Obviously I went with; get him out of here!
@angi1972 - ewww, looks like in rodent family, I hate them! You were to brave, I would of left the house.
Wow! I have never seen a shrew and I don’t think I want to!! I hate it when critters come into the house. Great story… thanks for the laugh!
