One of my favorite shows is Wait Wait Don’t Tell me on NPR hosted by Peter Segal. If you haven’t heard it, it’s an enjoyable way to spend an hour on an Saturday, or anytime actually with the invention of the miraculous interweb… thank you Al Gore… (snicker)
Peter Segal has a new book out called The Book of Vice, I can’t wait to read it. I was listening to Talk of The Nation the other day and they were discussing the Eliot Spitzer scandal… and Peter’s book fit right in there… At the time I thought nothing of it I was just enjoying the show.
As Ben and I were hustling out the door this morning, I was letting my mind wander, always a dangerous thing. I was taking in the mess on the porch and thinking about a bill that needed to be paid and a call to the insurance office, I was thinking about a a new Ipod touch 80gb that I’d like to get for Ben but we just don’t have the money… So I looked at Ben and said… “I’m sorry that we take all of your money. If you didn’t have us you would have a clean house and lots of expendable cash, I’m sorry.”
To which he gave me a DON’T BE AN IDIOT look and said he would never want that. He never thought that way. He loved having us and wouldn’t have it any other way…
AWWW… I know… right?
I was still feeling a little bad about being the black hole of money… and then I remembered the NPR interview…
Hmmm Here is Spitzer, a brilliant, powerful, goal oriented man, his future wide open before him and instead of turning to his lovely wife he spends 1000 to 5000 dollars for one time with a hooker…
Not to disparage the hooker, she could be lovely girl, but 1000 to 5000 dollars!?!
Okay… so I am a good looking, funny, entertaining, educated, creative woman…
How much am I worth? I have done the figuring in my head and Ben is getting a massive deal!
I am going to stop worrying about all of the things he could have without me and start concentrating on the things he has with me… all in all I am quite sure we are lucky to have each other…
Now I need to go read that book.

Yes, he was insane.
I don’t think there’s much of a market for overweight 35 year olds, so I would probably have to charge the going street rate. $50 for half an hour, or a rock of crack. As for any special services, I couldn’t perform them and would be worthless. If I had to sell it or die, I would end up dead. I’m just not hooker material– *sigh*.

When I heard that those call girls charged up to $5000 and hour, I though, man….I need to get paid for my services! As a domestic diva/trophy wife, I’m sure I can do all the things she does, and then some!
@angi1972 - Yeah, as a companion, but not as a sex object. And at 5’3″ and 160 pounds, I am most def overweight! I’m considering a diet again, heaven help me. I’m trying to start one but I’m reading “The Road” and the dad and the little boy are starving and desperately scrounging any food they can find and I keep feeling like I have to somehow eat for them. Isn’t that silly!

Unfortunately for Spitzer (and his wife), it wasn’t just once, it sounds like the man spent upwards of $80,000 on call girls. Ouch.

As I was listening to Elliot Spitzer resign, I kept hearing Bill Clinton say, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman…”, so different. I guess when you pay for it, it is somehow worse. I feel for Mr. Spitzer and his family. He got caught doing what probably every politician in Washington and the rest of the country have done… of course this doesn’t dismiss his indiscretion. He made the right choice to resign, I just wonder how much politics was behind that resignation. Very interesting, as I watch from Texas…

sweetheart, you’re missing two points here…one is that men do not pay hookers for sex. they pay hookers to GO AWAY after sex. which leads to the other point-they want to try and do things no decent wife would consider and they can do that by paying women off.

I was thinking along the same lines as k8tthelate, he paid for them to do things I wouldn’t and he paid them to leave. As for what I’m worth? Getting a guy off is the easy part keeping him satisfied for 25 plus years that takes dedication. How about the men we’re married to, what could they reasonably get away with charging if they put themselves on the open market?

its easy look around and see the bad points… if he didn’t have you he’d soon start to see the error of it.. In terms of 5000 , in todays market thats about 3000 euro… it would probably get you something pretty awful.

I love NPR–I listen to it constantly. Spitzer is a classic example of arrogance in power, and goes to prove the saying, “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.” In his case, good riddance.
It would take more than money. I have to have body, mind and soul. Sounds like you already have that…lucky!

It’s a shame what Spitzer did, but it’s always a plus you can enjoy it via the Interweb. I would love to say “absolute power corrupts absolutely” but maybe he was just doing something stupid and had money to burn. When I’m feeling stupid and have cash to spend, I just end up wasting my time/money on Guitar Hero.
