These are what I call buffalo ducks. I don’t know why I call them that, I’m not even sure that’s what they are. They never let you get very close. The males are black and white, the females are a shiny brown and they have crests on their heads similar to a wood ducks.
Thanks you guys, for all of you thought’s, ideas and hopes about soul mates. Now I have things to cogitate (I love that word) on for a while.
Thanks.
*************************************EDIT****************************************
After intensive research… (three minutes at the Duck’s Unlimited identification sight) ahem…
I have discovered that the ducks above could be one of three types of duck…
The Barrow’s goldeneye, the common Goldeneye, or the …. Bufflehead duck.
Now probably when I was younger my Pop had identified them as a Bufflehead… he may have said Buffalo duck… or I may have just heard it that way, the jury is out on that one.
When I was looking at the pictures though they look much more like the goldeneye to me, but since they never let you get close enough to see their eye, it will remain a mystery, at least until I take binoculars with me.

cogitate… now that’s a good one
that tuft of hair isnt it why?
I like that word too.
Do ducks have soul mates? If so, they should stop being voyeurs. I heard all about Peking Duck.
they look more like whale ducks to me i dont think i have ever seen a buffalo in water? well not that i have seen many buffalo,s period. ok im lost now how about you ?
I don’t know what kind of ducks you have there either! However, I wonder if there are loons where you live? No, I’m not being looney & I don’t mean living WITH you! Ever since I saw On Golden Pond I’ve thought I might like to sit on a quiet dock somewhere and listen to loons. Do you see what you’ve started? Everyone has had a nutty reply to this post! That should give you more cause for cogitating. Peace
Ang. lol neways how’ve you been?
Quack quack! =D I’ll be by this weekend to show Ben how to fix your screens ;^D
Have a great day, YOU!
<<< If they get out of the water and they look like this they’re donkeyducks
<<< Not to be confused with Donkey_ducks… which look like this
Bufflehead, Buffalo… I can see that happening! I want water near me!! I really want to live on the ocean; but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Deep Sigh. Oh well. I guess I’ll just go back to my landlocked state and visit the coast from time to time.
donkey is so goofy !
It looks like the ducks are soulmates… hahahahahahaha
Yep those ducks are a mystery.
Hugs, Tricia
Ducks are cool until they Poop~
Have a super night!
a duck is a duck, i say.
However you had an idea about those ducks ‘ name . When I stop in front a wild plant or animal and I realize I don’ t know the name I feel anxious and ignorant . And the researches are sometimes hard .
Love
Michel
Hello Ang…..Hope your doing well today. Looking at your comments about those ducks…got me thinking to a time long ago…I dated a guy and we would go fishing together in his boat up North. He would always make “loon” sounds and they would come near the boat. The loon is a beautiful bird (I am not sure if you would catorgarize it as a duck though???) I love there haunting calls at night….funny how you can find beauty in so many things….if you just take the time to see them. Again…Your soooo lucky living so close to the water. Huggs
RYC…Thanks for the offer of assistance on the HTML….I guess I just dont know what I am doing wrong
Definitely more practice needed
nice ducks…
I thought goldeneye on first flush but the beak kinda looks like a meganser. I like the little ‘buffalo ducks’ first to come north last to come back through this way. We see hundreds of them on early season kayak trips.
Hooded megansers! Goldeneyes have a bill that looks almost identical to a bluebill (scaup)
Let me get all my ducks in a row and get back to you on that one…..
I don’t know anything about ducks…. we have geese here, and they are attack geese. LOL
buffalo is a city alot of stuff comes from.
its a city of invention.
buffalo drinks,
buffalo ducks,
buffalo clocks,
buffalo wings………………
you get the picture…………….
trying to find REAL True love.
wish me luck with the love files.
I am a duck lover, too. They do indeed mate for life. By the way, I have been carrying may mail art around and something always happens on the way to the post office. Today, for sure. *Hugs*
or maybe they are donald ducks? LOL
so sweet
And what about (very seriously) the red-breasted merganser (“mergus serrator” in latin) ?
ryc : Thanks one billion time for your nice comment that make my heart so warm again (hug)
Faquet sent me over, I’m a wildlife artist. I believe these are hooded mergansers, which are a type of duck with crests. Note the long dark bill, the opposite of goldeneyes’ short light one. Also, neither they or the buffleheads have a neck ring & dark chest. But don’t take my word for it, I’m looking at Nat’l Geo’s Field Guide to N.A. Birds ot you can check the guide of your choice or go to enature.org for an online version.
