  • Today is a better day. I’m trying to make it a better day any way.

So here is a new happy memory.

My Great Aunt Shirley made a special trip up to see us at Easter time. It was just an over nighter she drove six hours here and six hours back to her home… All to do THIS…

The kids were so happy… you would think she gave them GOLD or Yu-gi-oh cards.

I told them they were lucky, Aunt D and I had to graduate high school before we got our special blankets from Aunt Shirley.

Aunt Shirley who is in her seventies, although she doesn’t look or act it, said she wanted to give all of the grand babies their blankets before her fingers stopped working and that D and I had always been special to her.

Talk about making some one feel good. I get the warm fuzzies still and I need those today.

I returned the favor  I think when I insisted the kids sit for this picture. Pop printed one out almost immediately and Aunt Shirley was so happy… You would have thought we gave her… gold or lottery tickets?

    NOW I feel better. Ang

  • That is just awesome! I know C cherishes her balnket that her grandma made her  – I know the kids will love theirs too. Glad you are better.

  • i know how they feel the littlest thing they give you means a lot no matter what it is. i make quilts and everyone in my family is mad because i made one for my mom and no one else and she uses it everyday she afraid to wash it i told her i would make her another one but she said no that one is special. because i made it for her and we give her stuff all the time.

  • OMG…that’s so sweet!!  Now that’s something that makes my heart feel very warm…thanks for sharing that today sweetie!!  Love you!!

  • Gifts from the heart!!!!  That’s surely the best kind to get.  Your Aunt must be a very special lady, just the six hour drives is making a statement about her generosity.  You have four boys?  I have two children (grown) and I wish I’d had five or six!  It’s all good though…I have a wonderful Grandson to enjoy.  I hope you have a wonderful day!  Peace

  • Aw, how sweet is that!!  My MIL made blankets for our kids too. I think it’s the heart felt gifts that are the best!!

RYC:  They weren’t that high up there yesterday– Lord knows I would have to be asleep for that!!  LOL

  • Very cool!  In our family, we had quilters, but they’re all gone now, and I never had the patience for it.  Glad you’re doing better today.

  • Awwww that’s a cute pic and a great story!

  • Oops!  I know better than to assume a child is a boy because it has short hair – we had a conversation over the weekend about that very thing (just because some baby girls don’t have hair – you should not assume it is a boy and THEN say so!).  It’s just a little thing but bad manners none the less.  I didn’t have any hair until I was over a year old – my Mom would TAPE bows to my head.  Maybe that’s what’s wrong with me!  Your children and nephew are all precious and happy in your picture, that’s the main thing.  Peace

  • that is absolutely adorable! My daughter received so many handmade afghans when she was born – we will see which one is her favorite! I love the one my grandmother made for her – so much love and personality in a fancily tied pile o’ yarn!

  • i feel like crap and so does Jessica.

    any advice?

  • do you have bipo?

    i do.

thats why i crash and get down and depressed.

    Jess too.

Happy pills dont work for me.

    doctors dont know why.

  • I LOVE THE BLANKETS!  I have always wanted someone to crochet one for me…. alas, no one ever has…. where can I find me one of those Great-Aunt Shirleys.  The closest thing I have is an Aunt Charlotte.  hmph….  LOL!  Happy Tuesday!

  • Awww, now I’m warm and fuzzy too!  Thanks.  My grandma made all of the grandkids a crocheted afghan and a quilt.  Each of the great grandkids got a quilt in crib size, because she was well into her 70′s when those started arriving.  Anyway, she made three for me when I had my first, saying that I should keep the two extras in case she wasn’t around for the rest of my kids.  She survived long enough to see my D2, but didn’t make it to my D3.  But, happily, I did save back that 3rd blankie even though I thought I was done having kids, so all of the great gands were covered — literally!

  • I cannot believe how long that video took to flippin load! And I am on a T1 line!!!!!! Anyway, dudess, this must be going around…this funk we are all in. Oh, and things that I don’t want people to see…are mostly inside, and intensely personal…hence, the funk. Dealing with teenage daughter issues, when I should get married issues (this effects me and teenage daughter), feeling like a dork at work issues…dudess. I try to remember that I am who I am and it is good enough. I am living NOT for everyone elses approval, and I feel that I have a purpose on this earth and trying to live it out. Things most people don’t air out on xanga, although some do. Anyway, love the kiddos!

  • Cool stuff when kids have that good a time.

  • WOW…that’s awesome! Those blankets are a nice keepsake to go along with the memories.  I had a Great-Aunt Shirley too.  She died a few years ago just north of age 100!

  • That is soooo flipping awesome and sweet. The kiddo’s look adorable and so very comfy.
Also, the fact that they appreciate the blnkets so much, speaks volumes of you, raising them. Apparently they are not spoiled rotten brats.
    Good for you, luv’

ryc: You cracked me up with the grass and  sucking comment, which made me drool since my face is still numb on the right side, which cracked up Steve and Mick, hehe.

Have a wonderful rest of the day and stay safe and warm.
    Big hugs, L

  • How sweet is that ?!! I have a few of those blankets laying around…just something about them huh?

Sorry you aren’t feeling great! But I am sure you look MARVELOUS DARLING!!

RYC: SPUNK…ROFL..you think I am full of spunk? well…ok…maybe on Wednesdays!! BAH!! Ohh hell I crack myself up! You soooooo left the door open for that one!

RYC: Thanks, seems I came off a bit uncaring.

  • thanks for the wonderful memory :)   it cheered me up :)

  • wow…great post ang…that pic is great.

  • Wonderful picture, reminds me of an old episode of Leave it to Beaver.

  • Great blankets!!

RYC:  I think the guy that does the dot-to-dot books does the ones for Games magazine. :)

  • Hi there, just might get to go racing Fri if the rain holds off, hope so need a fix.

  • We had Aunt Suzy- she didn’t drive as far as I can remember but she did make quilts for all the nieces and nephews…she didn’t have kids of her own but we loved her bunches. Your kids look so ….happy.

  • I always got a kick out of getting a lottery ticket for a gift… being of course that there’s a real good chance that I’d be getting somewhere between absolutely nothing and $2.

Question is, what would one do if they won BIG? And I mean B-I-G!!!

Things that make ya go hmmm.

  • What an absolutely lovely and thoughtful gift (to and from)!  So much better than any toys or games or money…what your aunt gave those boys is history, family and roots.  I looooooove it!!

  • How can you not feel better looking at them four angels????

  • My daughter loves a quilt that my Grandma made for my older brother. My Grandma died when I was 10, but I’m so glad my daughter cherishes something her Great-Grandma made over 30 years before she was born.

RYC: you did great! I spent a LOT of time researching the answers for mine. LOL

  • Sweetie… that is better than gold or a lottery tickets.

  • I love it when family/friends do that for me and my family.  Each of my children were sent a homemade quilt from my friends mother who is over 70 years old.  You know that it had to take a while for her to make it.  The kids were so happy to receive it….and I took a picture of them with the quilt around each one.  :)   She loved it!  I am so happy that you gave her the pics!!!!!!

    Thank you for commenting!!!

  • I like those striped ones!!!!!

  • Aunt Shriley sounds like my mom pictures ARE gold.

No luck with the brookies but it was a wonderful stream and a great day to be on it.
I have come to the conclusion that I will not be able to solve the problem, not now at least. The best I can do now is confront my failure and try to find another way.

  • those were beautiful. my grandmother did that type of stuff. I’m glad you were able to give her a picture right away.

  • I think you really returned the favor, asking children to sit for the picture. They look so happy, aunt Shirley will be very proud of them.
The blankets are very nice, they look a little “folk”. Loved good old things… with a tip of longing.
    Ciao,

  • At 24 years old- I am the Aunt Shirley around here.

I made scarves for all my neices and nephews to match their coats last year for Christmas.  I remember my three year old neice looking at me and telling me her mommy would teach her how to crochet as she watched me working on a scarf.  I also haven’t forgotten the “you’ll have to ask auntie Amber to teach you” look in her eyes.  (She can’t crochet either)  I look forward to passing on the tradition of crocheting.  Not enough things are handmade with love anymore.

And too many people don’t care or appreciate for the novelty of it.

Small businesses are dying because people would rather go to (ugh) Wal-mart and pay 10 dollars for a scarf that everyone has one, then even pay $6 for a scarf made by hand that no one else will have.  It’s sad.

One of my nephews is 9 years old, and he loves his scarf so much he doesn’t wear it to school so it won’t get lost.  And he prayed for snow this year so he could wear it!!

If only everyone could appreciate the love put into these items like my nephew does.  Not too mention a blanket crocheted by hand always holds up better to time then one you paid for in a store.  The quality is there because of the love and care!  Don’t let the boys forget that!

  • Love how happy the kids look in this picture!

RYC: Really really appreciate your comment, thank you!  You’re so correct in what you said…we’ll be just fine and a little bump in the road now and then isn’t such a bad thing.

  • nothing yet….i dreamt about so hopfully today!

  • RYC:  I think the one you are talking about is called “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds Five. Thanks Ang!

  • very cute kids very satisfied under the great blankets…aunts know that self-made gifts are always the best !

Wish you stay happy and have a great time

  • Great Great Memories that you are making.  Way to go kiddo!
